Internship Experience with Adv. Abhay Prakash Sahay: “Learned to apply law practically”

Name, College, Year of study:
My name is Ayushi Saraswat, a final year student pursuing law degree from Yashwantrao Chavan Law College, Pune, Maharashtra.
Name of organization:
Advocate – Abhay Prakash Sahay [Central Government Standing Counsel] at High Court of Delhi (do not publish the advocate’s name).
Duration of internship:
One and a half month.
Location:
In-office.
How did I get my legal internship last winter?
Sent the updated resume directly to the advocate.
WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:
I was working with a CGSC (Central Government Standing Counsel) at Delhi High court, we had court hearings daily. So, as a legal intern we were required to read case files a day before the hearing, make a summary of it then give briefings of the case to my senior on the day of the hearing and attend the hearings with them. When we are done with the hearings of the day, we were required to inform our client through mail that they have got a new case (if any). Sometimes I have also done filling of case with the guidance of seniors. I have serviced some documents to the parties of the case.
We mostly had civil dispute cases relating to agreement (salary, pension, appointment, retirement, retrenchment, allowances, provident fund, etc.), property (partition, buying, selling, etc.), income tax, and similar topics.
Experience:
My internship was an in-office internship so I got to experience the daily workings of the court closely and learnt work ethics. I am a law student I knew the theoretical aspects of the laws but never knew how it is applied practically. So, it was all new for me but very interesting for sure.
My observations:
-The environment of the High Court of Delhi in itself is mesmerizing.
-The work culture and ethics are something to be admired.
-Life in the High Court complex is worth dreaming about to become a High Court judge or an advocate.
Stipend:
I did not get any stipend as it was an unpaid internship.
Conclusion:
Getting an Internship at High Court is as interesting as it seems. I got a lot of knowledge about the daily workings of the court and court procedure. It is very different from everything we have been seeing through movies and other sources. My respect for this field has been increased by seeing the procedure and working of the High Court. It is a tough job to do but its worth all the hardships.
