Application Process

I visited the Assam Human Rights Commission office in the month of November 2022 in search of an internship for the month of December 2022. They provided an application form to be signed by the Principal/HOD. And I handed over the letter to the Assam Human Rights Commission office after getting the signature from the Principal. As per the vacancy they provided me an internship.

First impression

My first impression of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) was great, as it gave me an opportunity to interact with the Chairperson Members of the Commission, and students from various colleges in Assam. The office of the Assam Human Rights Commission is a newly constructed permanent building that was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Assam Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 03, 2022. Established in the year 1996, the commission was functioning from a rented building at Bhangagarh till its inauguration of the permanent building.

Work Profile

We were told about the functioning of the State Human Rights Commission and the National Human Rights Commission by the officers of the Commission. Apart from this, lectures were held on the concept and declaration of human rights, the right to information, gender sensitization, human rights and police, disability rights, human rights of prisoners, etc.

The main task that was allotted was to analyze the cases that were placed within a specific time limit, to find out whether there were any anomalies while dealing with those cases, and whether there was any non-compliance with the provisions on the part of the Commission. There was no non-compliance and eventually, I had to make a report and also make a list of cases that were filed and resolved by the commission.

Working Environment and People

The working environment in Assam Human Rights Commission was average and the people at the internship site were good, especially the chairperson and other members of the commission.

I talked to some staff members. His approach was warm and nice. Hence it made the internship process easy.

Good Things

The best part of this internship was that all interns got the opportunity to interact with the Chairperson and Secretary of the Assam Human Rights Commission.

Bad Things

There were no such bad things in this internship.

Stipend

No Stipend was provided.

Accommodation

I am a locality. But off-station students can stay in PG or rented rooms in the GMCH area or Ulubari area.

Any other thing

It was a fine experience as an intern at the commission. However, I have realized, more importantly, that there is a lot of work to be done in the world that sometimes involves facing the dark side of reality, but that somebody has to step up and do it.
