Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University Organizes Workshop on Mediation

Prayagraj, May 03, 2026 —Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University, Prayagraj organized a Workshop on Mediation to provide fundamental concepts and practical tools necessary for the process of Medication. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from University’s students who were trained by professional mediators and academicians. The valedictory session of the workshop was graced by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal, Judge, Allahabad High Court, as the Chief Guest, along with Mr. Sanjay Kumar, Advocate, Allahabad High Court and Dr. Subroto Roy, Accredited Mediator, Supreme Court of India as Guests of Honour. The session began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and the dignitaries were felicitated by Senior Professor (Dr.) Usha Tandon, Founding Vice-Chancellor of the University. The workshop included four technical sessions aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of mediation conducted by following subject experts Dr. Subroto Roy, Smt. Chitra Ram Hankare, Ms. Uma Ramanathan, Prof. Kiran Rai and Prof. Chirag Balyan.
Addressing the gathering, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal observed that mediation has been an inherent part of Indian society, particularly in village communities where disputes are resolved amicably. He stated that mediation has become a necessity in contemporary times. While litigation remains crucial in serious matters, mediation serves as an effective mechanism both within and beyond the courtroom. He further pointed out that delays in judicial processes and shortage of staff contribute to the increasing pendency of cases, thereby enhancing the importance of mediation as an alternative dispute resolution.
In her address, Senior Professor (Dr.) Usha Tandon highlighted the contributions of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal towards the development of the University. She emphasized that mediation has emerged as an important and accessible method of dispute resolution, benefiting society at large. She noted that mediation promotes agreeable and innovative solutions by enabling parties to resolve disputes through dialogue and mutual understanding.
The four technical sessions comprised of – the first session on “Introduction to Mediation” was conducted by Dr. Subroto Roy, who explained the fundamental principles of mediation and its role in preserving relationships while resolving disputes. The second session on “Law on Mediation,” conducted online by Smt. Chitra Ram Hankare, focused on the legal framework governing mediation in India, including Lok Adalats and mediation centres, and highlighted the relevance of institutional mediation. The third session, an online interactive discussion led by Ms. Uma Ramanathan, emphasized communication skills, neutrality, empathy, and the importance of understanding the perspectives of disputing parties during mediation. The fourth session comprised hands-on training conducted by Prof. Kiran Rai and Prof. Chirag Balyan, focusing on practical mediation exercises, negotiation strategies, and ethical responsibilities of mediators. Students actively participated in simulation-based exercises and role-play activities, gaining practical exposure to mediation techniques and dispute resolution processes.
The dignitaries appreciated the initiative of the Legal Aid Society in promoting practical legal education and spreading awareness about mediation among students. They underscored the role of mediation in strengthening access to justice and reducing the burden on courts.Through the workshop, the University reflects its commitment in giving cutting edge education to its students.
