Interview | With Adv Anant Sharma on Career in Corporate Advisory and Trade Law

To begin, can you provide us with a brief overview of your professional background and the areas of law you specialize in, particularly focusing on corporate advisory and legal solutions?
I have enrolled myself with the Bar Council of Delhi in the year 2011 and practising since then. I primarily work for Corporates of all sizes with a special focus on Foreign Direct Investments in India and International Trade Laws. I have an online portal www.mylawyersadvice.com which gives free and ready information to people through blogs and research https://mylawyersadvice.com/blog/ . I also advise Startups, SMEs and MSMEs and resolve their corporate legal issues.
How did you develop your expertise in corporate advisory, and what motivated you to specialize in this field?
It took a pretty long time to become an expert in the corporate laws. I always had this in mind and had chosen corporate law as my elective subject in my law school.
For law students aspiring to specialize in corporate advisory and legal solutions, what foundational skills and knowledge areas would you recommend they focus on during their education?
Law students should read more. They should also do certification and special courses on the same. Further, their internships should be focussed.
How can law students effectively bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical skills required in trade law work?
The gap can be filled by only doing meaningful internships with dedication.
In your experience, what are the key attributes that law firms and companies seek in young professionals looking to enter the field of corporate advisory and legal solutions?
Dedication & Punctuality
Internships offer valuable hands-on experience. What should law students consider when seeking internships in areas like corporate advisory, legal solutions, FDI, and trade law?
Students should be ready to slog. Having said that, internships are not for people who are not ready to slog. Students these days are not willing to work.
The fields of corporate law and advisory encompass various specializations. How can students identify which area resonates with them and tailor their academic and career paths accordingly?
Students should explore all the areas. Laws do not work in water-tight compartments and are always interlinked. Then the student should decide.
From your perspective, how can students approach mentors in the field, and how can such mentorships contribute to their learning and career development?
Students can surely use LinkedIn to approach. Best platform as per my knowledge. Apart from this, they can get help from JRTC Interns and Internship Bank.
