Share & spread the love

Ms. Devika Raj is a lawyer and content writer. She has been in the profession for the past 3 years. In her interview, she introduces the reader to legal content writing.

How would you like to introduce yourself to our readers? What inclined you towards the field of legal content writing?

I am a lawyer and a writer. I was inclined towards writing since my school days. However, back then I had never imagined that writing could be a serious career option until I won the writing competition (Creative Writing Category) at the prestigious Khushwant Singh Literary Festival held in 2013, and Sir Mark Tully offered me an internship in his office! I believe nature has its ways of setting paths for you, I came to study law at Panjab University and somewhere between legal assignments and my passion for writing, freelance legal content writing happened.

You have been a content writer for almost 3 years? Can you share your experience with us?

It is rewarding, to say the least! Sometimes monetarily, sometimes otherwise. It has helped me understand the application of law in its real sense. I think writing should be a lawyer’s best friend, the more you practice with your words the better your “brief” get.

Devika, you have been a freelancer, along with practising law? How do you manage your time?

I enjoy writing, and besides that, it is the demand of the profession! The more you write, the more you read, and the more you know!

You have really strong work experience when it comes to content writing. As a freelancer, can you help our readers to understand how to find organisations to work with?

First up, build your portfolio! That’s the most important step.

Second, perfect the language you write in whether it’s Hindi, English, French or German.  Read, write, speak, and in fact, breathe in that language, more fluent you are with your words, the better you’ll write.

Third, aim at organisations/portals/magazines whose columns you like reading because most often than not that is your writing style. Your reading preferences say a lot about your writing style.

Fourth, reach out to them with your CVs and a couple of original samples.

Fifth and most important, FOLLOW UP!

Devika, what are the best portals that students can refer to?

To begin with, you can use LinkedIn to generate leads, couple of other freelancing websites like Fiver, and People Per Hour are good too.

However, sourcing direct clients/leads through word of mouth will always benefit more both intellectually and monetarily.

What are the career options available?

These days, you manifest an opportunity and you have it! Content Creation, Article Writing, Blog Writing, IG Reel Content, AI Assistant, Travel Writing, Digital Marketing and A LOT MORE!

Any closing words for our readers?

Be Creative! Most often than not, your creativity and art will get you through many rough situations in life. Write, Paint, Stitch, Play- do something that nobody or no situation can take away from you. As they say, they can take away your money but they can’t take away your qualities.

Plus, it really helps in your profession too. Talking about your passion/hobbies can be a great conversation starter and help you in networking effectively. You can’t talk about work all day, anywhere and anytime.

Trust your instincts! Most often than not, your soul can already predict the future. Heed to its indications.
