About the Event

On 1 July 2024, India witnessed a landmark shift in its criminal justice framework with the enforcement of three new legislations: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). These statutes replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act, which had governed the system for more than a century.

The reform initiative was designed with the objectives of modernisation, digital integration, victim-centric justice, and enhanced procedural efficiency, thereby aligning the criminal law framework with contemporary societal needs and constitutional values.

Now, one year into this transformative legal transition, it becomes crucial to critically evaluate the practical impact and effectiveness of these codes. This seminar aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the substantive, procedural, and evidentiary innovations introduced under the new regime, while also reflecting on emerging jurisprudence, implementation hurdles, and the broader implications for access to justice in India.
