About the Seminar

The fascinating interplay between culture and legal language has far-reaching consequences for the way we create, interpret, and apply laws. At its core, legal language is a product of the cultural context in which it evolves.

As we navigate the complexities of legal language, it becomes clear that cultural influences shape every aspect of it – from the words we use to the way we argue cases. This, in turn, leads to intriguing variations in legal terminology, interpretation, and application across different jurisdictions.

But what happens when different cultures collide in the courtroom? The dominance of Western legal languages, particularly English, has often led to the marginalization of indigenous languages and cultures. This is a pressing concern in today’s globalized world, where laws and legal norms are increasingly being shared across borders.

So, what’s the impact of culture on legal language?

  • Western legal languages and norms dominate the global stage
  • Legal language varies significantly across cultures
  • Translating and interpreting legal texts can be a minefield
  • Indigenous languages and cultures are often marginalized
