The Delhi Judicial Services Examination (DJS) is conducted by the Delhi High Court for the recruitment of qualified candidates to the posts of Civil Judge/Judicial Magistrate in the Delhi Judicial Service. It is a highly competitive examination that tests the knowledge, aptitude, and skills of candidates in various aspects of civil and criminal laws, as well as procedural laws.

The Delhi Judicial Services examination typically consists of three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination: This is the first stage of the DJS examination and is conducted in an objective multiple-choice question (MCQ) format. It generally covers topics such as Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Civil Procedure (CPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), Indian Evidence Act, Limitation Act, and other relevant laws.
  2. Main Examination: Candidates who qualify the Preliminary Examination are eligible to appear for the Main Examination, which is a written examination consisting of subjective questions. The Main Examination typically covers topics such as civil law, criminal law, and procedural laws, including CPC, CrPC, Indian Evidence Act, Contract Act, Partnership Act, Limitation Act, and other relevant laws.
  3. Interview: Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for a personal interview, which assesses their personality, communication skills, and suitability for the judicial service.

The syllabus for Delhi Judicial Services Examination is discussed below as:

Phase 1 – Preliminary Examination

You will face the preliminary exam first which is an objective test of 200 Marks.The question will be based on following subjects:

  1. General knowledge
  2. English
  3. Constitution of India
  4. Code of Criminal Procedure
  5. Code of Civil Procedure
  6. Indian Penal Code
  7. Indian Contract Act
  8. Indian Partnership Act
  9. Principle governing Arbitration Law
  10. Specific Relief Act
  11. Indian Limitation Act
  12. Indian Evidence Act

The minimum qualifying marks in the Preliminary Examination will be 60% for General and 55% for Reserved Categories i.e. Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Physically Handicapped (Blind/Low Vision) /Orthopedically handicapped/hearing impaired).

Phase 2 – Mains Examination

The exam is conducted under the four papers:

Paper I – Gk And Language (250 Marks)

This paper comprises of two sections.

Section I: General Knowledge: This is to test the candidate’s knowledge of current affairs etc. i.e. Current legal topics in the news, Static and dynamic GK (100 Marks)

Section II: Language (Essay, Translation and Precis Writing): This is to test the candidate’s knowledge and power of expression in English (150 Marks)

There will be two passages for translation, one in English – to be translated into Hindi.

One in Hindi– to be translated into English.

Paper II – Civil Law I (200 Marks)

You will be asked question based on the Following:

  • Indian Contract Act,
  • Indian Sale of Goods Act,
  • Indian Partnership Act,
  • Specific Relief Act,
  • Hindu Law,
  • Mohammedan Law,
  • Delhi Rent Control Act
  • Law of Torts.

Paper III – civil law II (200 Marks)

You will be asked question based on the Following:

  1. Civil Procedure Code
  2. Law of Evidence Act
  3. Law of Limitation
  4. Law of Registration

Paper IV – Criminal Law (200 Marks)

You will be asked question based on the Following:

  1. Criminal procedure code
  2. Indian Penal Code
  3. Indian evidence act

NOTE : Minimum marks are 40% in each written paper and aggregate of 50% to qualify for interview. Relaxation of 5% each has been made for SC/ST/PWD.

Phase 3 – Interview (150 Marks)

  1. Interview will carry 150 Marks.
  2. Need to score at least 50% (relaxation by 5% for RC) to qualify.
  3. Aggregate of the marks obtained in both interview and written exam will determine the position.

Note:

  • Only such candidates will be called for Viva voce who have obtained 40% marks in each written paper and 50% marks in the aggregate except in the case of candidates belonging to reserved categories i.e. Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Physically Handicapped (Blind/Low Vision) /Orthopedically handicapped/hearing Impaired) in whose case the qualifying marks will be 35% in each written paper and 45% in the aggregate.
  • A candidate of General Category must secure minimum 50% marks and a candidate of Reserved Category i.e. Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Physically Handicapped (Blind/Low Vision) / Orthopedically handicapped/hearing impaired) must secure minimum 45% marks in Viva voce to be eligible for being recommended for appointment to the service.
