About the Nirma University

The Institute of Law, Nirma University (ILNU) is a pioneer for imparting legal education in all spheres. ILNU also engages in extensive research activities in various fields. In furtherance of the same, they have established Centres in several disciplines to promote research and understanding therein. Every year ILNU organizes several academic events, conferences and seminars to advance knowledge.

The Opportunity

To stimulate knowledge, the Centre for Competition Law and Market Study (CCLMS) in collaboration with the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR) at ILNU is organizing a conference on 16th April 2021.

About the Conference

CCLMS was founded and established in the year 2019 with the aim to promote research in the field of Competition Law, with a focus on its incidence on other fields of law and to create an awareness regarding the contemporary issues and trends in the field.

Similarly, with an aim to facilitate research, discussion and policy inputs in the field of Intellectual Property Rights, we established the CIPR. The field of IPR not only acknowledges the creations of intellect but also fosters growth in the society. The Centre promotes research, extension, and training in the field of intellectual property through the dissemination of information and initiating research in novel and unexplored areas.

The field of Competition Law and Intellectual Property Rights govern two different subject matters, but
they fall in a similar domain. The former field regulates market competition by preventing monopolistic
conduct while the latter seeks to grant monopolistic (exclusive) rights to the creators of an
invention/innovation, which makes it pertinent to understand the interplay between both fields.

The CCLMS and CIPR are organizing a conference that will involve a discourse on the interface of Competition Law and Intellectual Property Rights. It will be followed by a discussion on the jurisdictional problems which arise when there are overlapping issues involving both fields.

The Conference will comprise of 2 panel discussion sessions on the following topics:

Session 1: Interface of Competition Law and Intellectual Property Rights: Exhaustion Principle and Essential Facilities Doctrine

Session 2: Irresoluble Jurisdiction Conflicts between Competition Commission of India and Intellectual property Sectoral Regulators

The registration fee for participation in the conference is 500 rupees per head.
