Shastrartha, the Debating Society of Dharmashastra National Law University, is the University’s platform for debate, intellectual inquiry and critical thinking.

The Society promotes eloquence, analytical reasoning and persuasive advocacy among students and regularly participates in debating competitions as participants and adjudicators.

The flagship event is organised annually in collaboration with the Office of Senior Advocate and Member of Parliament Mr. Vivek Tankha in memory of the late Hon’ble Mr. Justice R.K. Tankha.

The competition will follow the British Parliamentary Debate format and will be conducted offline at the DNLU campus in Jabalpur.

Following five preliminary rounds, teams will break into Open Quarter-Finals and Novice Semi-Finals.

  • Team Format: 2v2 British Parliamentary Debate
  • Adjudicator Policy: N=N
  • Mode: Offline
  • Competition Manual: Sofia WUDC 2026 Updated Manual
  • Preliminary Rounds: 5
  • Break Category: Open Quarter-Finals and Novice Semi-Finals

Team Composition

Teams may consist of:

  • 2 Speakers; or
  • 2 Speakers + 1 Adjudicator

Eligibility

The competition is open to individuals who are pursuing or have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate programme from a university recognised by the UGC.

Students currently enrolled in schools are also eligible to participate.

Cross-university teams, consisting of individuals from different institutions, are permitted.

Novice Criteria

A participant will fall within the novice category subject to the following criteria:

  • No Major Breaks, including UADC, ABP and WUDC, among others.

JRKTPD’26 will also feature a Break Night for participants after the preliminary rounds. According to the brochure, it will be organised at a premium venue and is intended to provide participants with an opportunity to interact and socialise with fellow debaters.
