4 Weird Personal Injury Cases that You Have to Read to Believe

Share & spread the love

Personal injury courts often see cases that are serious and sometimes devastating. But sometimes, a case comes in that makes even the judge raise an eyebrow.

According to Lorenz and Lorenz, even if you believe your claims are downright bizarre, there’s a strong likelihood that someone else has already submitted a claim for something even weirder.

1.   Man Sued Because He Couldn’t Find Doorknob

In 1999, the world closely followed the legal proceedings between Cedrick Makara Newmark Reality and 40 Worth Associates.

Makara was working as a claim examiner at the time. On a fateful day, while on a break, he succumbed to nature’s call and visited the bathroom to relieve himself.

After he was finished with his business, Makara realized that the bathroom door had no knob for him to turn.

In a bid to free himself, he put his thumb into the hole where the latch mechanism is situated and immediately regretted that decision. Someone tried to open the door from outside, and his thumb was in this danger zone. It was twisted so hard that his tendons got damaged.

Makara sued the company responsible. Because he was out of work for about six months and was now also a disabled man, the court awarded him $3 million. Out of goodwill, his wife bagged $750,000 for the mental and physical torture she had been through with her husband.

2.   Woman Sued Weather TV Because It Rained When They Said It Wouldn’t

Everyone hates it when they get drenched by unexpected rain. But since we have no one to sue, we simply find dry clothes and move on with life.

But not this Israeli woman. She had someone to blame- Danny Rip from Channel 2, the weather channel. He told everyone there would be no rain on that faithful day, and she believed him.

Although everyone understands that weather forecasts aren’t exact predictions, this woman still wanted someone to pay.

She had fallen ill due to exposure to the rain and had to take time off work to get treated properly. She claimed her finances also suffered a huge deal, and she wanted reimbursement.

She was awarded $1000 for her troubles. This was in 1996.

3.   Woman Sues Train Station Because Train Didn’t Crush Her to Death

Imagine being mad at someone for ruining your plans to commit suicide. This was Seeing Sil Kim back in 2003. She, having decided her time on dear earth was up, proceeded to a subway in Manhattan, New York, and lay down flat.

As expected, the train came, but instead of crushing her to death, she was only partially amputated. She also suffered a fractured skull as well as other severe injuries.

As soon as Madam Kim came, she wanted justice. The case was messy, mostly because, at first, she had no memory of even taking herself to the subway.

Also, someone noticed her seeming suicide attempt and notified the police in time. Allegedly, the train operator was informed of the situation yet did not stop the train in time.

She initially demanded $14.1 million. But the judge was kind enough to beat it down to $9.9 million because she also played a role in the whole scenario.

The New York Transit Authority paid that fine.

4.   Woman Sued Jelly Belly Because Their Sports Beans Had Too Much Sugar

When food does not meet our expectations, what do we do? Whatever your answer is, you’re wrong, according to this plaintiff. She claimed the brand misled its consumers, including her, into believe the beans were a healthy food. And, upon consumption, she realized she had been deathly wrong. Of course, it wasn’t her fault that she failed to read the nutritional label. She wanted compensation for consuming these sugar-infested sports beans.

Wrapping Up

Some of these cases are laughable, but we can’t deny the fact that everyone has the right to seek justice however they see fit.

If you believe you have a genuine grievance, contact your attorney today and lay out your complaints. The law has given you the right.
