Trend of Adopting the Culture through Mass Media and Social Media

Introduction

Social media plays a great role, and has been become an important part of our lives. It imposes directly positive and negative impact on our culture. As we know that social media has adequate and easy access to the people, they share the news update from their local area, share opinion, ideas, innovation, awareness. It becomes easier to trade and commerce, people from one country are purchasing the goods and services from the other country. People of one country connect with other’s country through social media. They exchange their cultural belief, art, customs, rituals and any other things, through which people from other region become influence.  For example -Most of the Hindu celebrate the Christmas. Mass Media also plays a great role to promote the culture. As we know that the social media is a means of communication to the large audience through television, radio, advertisement etc. Mass media advertise or broadcast for their product used in particular festivals or the custom in other country. People start to adopt the food habits, dress-up, celebrates festivals, follow their fashion.

Social media and mass media has a great influence in modern time. Peoples are exchanging their view easily social media. It has become a means to exchange the idea and opinion. In India, Part III of Indian constitution grants the fundamental rights to their citizens. Art 19(i)(a) deals with the right to freedom of speech and expression.[1] Freedom of speech and expression means the right to express one’s own convictions and opinions freely by words of mouth, writing, printing, pictures or any other mode. It thus includes the expression of one’s ideas through any communicable medium or visible representation, such as, gesture, signs and the like.[2] Through social media people shares their arts i.e., handy craft, painting, dresses, songs, dance.

Ex- Popularly known Madhubani painting or Mithila painting of Bihar, that depicts social structure, cultural identity on the theme of religion, love and fraternity. It is famous in the world, its sale and purchase through social media become easier.

Through Instagram trending fashion artist share their idea for makeup, dress-up, and people become influence for follow their fashion. Most of the foreigner wears saree, and ethnic dress of India, similarly sometimes Indian woman wear western dress.

Art 25-28 deals with the Right to freedom of religion –We are free to enjoy festival. As influenced by the social media and mass media citizen of India celebrates the festivals of others religion. Right to religion is guaranteed by the fundamental right. It is clearly held by the Hon’ble S.C that “Secularism is a basic feature of the Constitution”.[3] It gives equal respect to all religion and religiously dominations. People belonging from Hindu religion celebrate Christmas, Christian celebrates Diwali, Muslim dress up their children as Lord krishna on the occasion of Janmashtami as influenced by the social media and mass media. Halloween party of US and western country has been started to celebrate in India also. Mass media that show the serials, in which they depict the socio-cultural aspects for instance Bihari watch the serials, in which are shown the Karwachauth festival that were not known to them, but after watching it Karwachauth has become prevalent in Bihar as well as almost all part of India. Food habits also get great significance globally. Indian like to eat Chinese, and Italian. Where foreigner like to eat Indian food. Now a days most of the students are learning skills through social media, that involves the language, singing, dancing.

Soial media and mass media share the news related to break the orthodox thinking. As we know that Art -14 of our Indian constitution guarantees “right to equality”, that simply states  that “The State shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India.”[4] The patriarchal mindset has been followed since long years in the India. People did not give opportunity to their female children to study, to dance. But now a days if they see the girls achivement in any field through mass media,  get influence by them. Thus, we can say that social media and mass media is playing a great role to promote the culture from one place to another place.

Disadvantages of Social Media and Mass Media

We use Social Media and Mass media. One that we benefited by it, but on the other hand Cyber crimes has took place  and other hatred twits increase the hate between two community, that is totally against the public peace and tranquillity,  crime like mob linching, riot have been taken place. Through whatsapp the fake news are forwarded to creat Panic situation between people. Some times mass media become bias and does not show the real news but one sided, and bifurcated for a particukar party,  that directly affect the democracy. Sexotortion, Pornography, blackmailing, Defamation, phising, hacking through social media has been increased. Sextortion a new word has been emerged, in which male victims are targeted for money.

Through the Social Media rich people involve in such a heinous crime -for instance

Rajkundra case – People including Rajkundra promise to the aspiring actress to give role in webseries and forced to involve in porm video. They change the script on the spot,  on the refusal, the actress were  asked to foot the bill for the shooting preparations.

Bully Bai app case – that is an online auction of the Muslim Women in India.Indian women holding prominent personality including journalists, social workers, students and famous personalities, accompanied by derogatory content. It was not the very first time but, in July 2020, similar app by name of “Sulli deal” had been emerged, where muslim women were online auctioned through bidders.

Sec – 294 of IPC deals with the punishment for obscene act and word in public place.[5]

Sec -67 of IT Act deals with the publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form.

Sec -67A of IT Act deals with the punishment for publishing or transmitted obscene material containing sexually explicit act that states – offender shall be punished on first conviction with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years and with fine which may extend to Rs 10 lakhs and in the event of second or subsequent conviction with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years and also with fine which may extend to Rs 10 lakhs.[6]

Conclusion

Social media and mass media has a great role in adoption of culture. People exchange their culture by using the social media easily. Social media and mass media gives boon to  integrate the people and develop the knowledge collaboration, cooperation between them. By using the social media people selling their products in foreign easily and get benefitted by them. Rich culture of India that have amalgamation of several culture prevalent in foreign country through social media. Silk saree, Mdhubani painting, folk music are becoming famous day by day in foreign.

Contrary to the benefit, person also affecting by social media and mass media by the several types of cyber crime. Thus, we can say that the social media and mass media has both pros and cons.
