The College is pleased to announce a Capacity Building Programme on E-Resources and Legal Research to be conducted purely via online mode.

Objectives

  1. To enhance participants’ competency in identifying, accessing, and utilising a wide range of legal e-resources for academic, professional, and policy-oriented research.
  2. To acquaint participants with both national and international e-databases, enabling comparative and transnational legal research.
  3. To promote ethical research practices in the digital environment, with due regard to copyright, data privacy, and academic integrity.
  4. To equip participants with advanced research techniques, including the use of AI-assisted legal research tools, to streamline legal research.
  5. To foster critical and analytical skills necessary for evaluating the authenticity, reliability, and relevance of legal information obtained from digital platforms.

Concept Note

The rapid digitisation of legal information has transformed the manner in which legal research is conducted in contemporary academic and professional settings. This digital transformation has unlocked unprecedented access to statutes, case laws, scholarly writings, and policy documents from across jurisdictions.

While traditional print-based research remains valuable, the proliferation of online legal databases, e-journals, institutional repositories, and open-access platforms has expanded the scope, accessibility, and efficiency of legal research. This shift has not only enhanced the availability of legal materials but has also introduced new methodologies, requiring proficiency in navigating, evaluating, and applying digital legal resources. Furthermore, the emergence of advanced research platforms, AI-assisted tools, and generative content technologies has fundamentally altered the research landscape, making ethical research practices a complex challenge.

In the Indian context, platforms such as SCC Online, Manupatra, along with international resources like Westlaw, LexisNexis, and HeinOnline, have become indispensable tools for law students, researchers, academics, and practitioners. However, the effective use of these e-resources demands specific skills — from advanced search techniques to the evaluation of source credibility, integration of technology in legal analysis, ensuring up-to-date sources and adherence to ethical standards in research.

Given this context, this Capacity Building Programme recognizes the evolving nature of legal scholarship and practice, and aims to not only equip participants in the technical aspects of accessing and navigating e-resources but also acquaint them with ethical and effective use of technology, integrity in scholarship, responsible AI adoption, and stringent adherence to authenticity standards in legal research. This programme will enable the participants to fully harness the potential of digital platforms for academic, professional, and policy-related legal work.
