Theme: When Power Crosses Borders
This edition invites writers to interrogate moments where authority spills beyond territorial lines and tests the fragile architecture of international law. The image above—crowds rallying beneath national flags, global institutions framed by symbols of sovereignty, and the uneasy coexistence of people, power, and politics, captures a world where borders are asserted, breached, and redefined.
It invites sharp, reflective pieces that examine how state power, coercion, and diplomacy blur the boundary between legality and dominance, and what this means for sovereignty, human rights, and the international legal order.
Writing Prompts (optional, not compulsory)
- When does the exercise of state power across borders become a violation rather than a right?
- Examine a recent instance where international law struggled to restrain brute force or political dominance.
- Explore how symbols, flags, institutions, crowds shape narratives of legitimacy and resistance.
- Analyse the silence or complicity of international institutions in moments of cross-border coercion.
- Write from the perspective of civilians caught between competing sovereignties.
- Contrast the promise of international law with its performance in crises involving borders and power.
- Propose a legal reform or doctrine to better regulate transnational uses of force.
