About Nari Gursahani Law College

Nari Gursahani Law College derives its name from the icon Dada Nari Gursahani. A giant among the lawyers, Dada Nari Gursahani, was the tallest stalwart of social work, a messiah of the Sindhi community, a magnanimous philanthropist, a committed educationist, an undaunted freedom fighter, a devoted spiritualist, who rendered honorary legal services to the HSNC Board as its member. He protected and fought for the rights of Sindhis as a linguistic minority. Law, he said, was an instrument of social engineering; and lawyers must do their best to serve the society and uphold the noble mission of Law.

Eligibility

  • Only Bonafide law students are eligible to participate in the competition.
  • Only one team from University/College/Law School is allowed to participate in the competition.

Structure of the Competition

The Competition will be structured as per the following format:

  • Preliminary Round
  • Final Round

Language

The language of the Competition shall be English.

Team Composition

A team shall comprise three students (two of them shall be designated as Speakers and one Researcher).

Dress Code

  • The participants shall adhere to the following dress code when present in any courtroom during the Competition.
  • Girls: White Salwar and Kurta or white shirt and black trousers along with black coat and black shoes.
  • Boys: White shirt, black trousers along with black coat and black shoes.
  • Note: The participating teams shall also adhere to the above-mentioned dress code while attending the inaugural and valedictory ceremonies of the Competition.

  • Teams must register by 15th September 2024 by filling out the registration form attached with the brochure.
  • Participation fees for the National Moot Court Competition is Rs. 1000/- (One Thousand only) per team. The participating teams must register and pay online. The registration fees will include 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 1 snack. An extra person excluding the team will be charged Rs. 1000. No refund will be made under any circumstances.
  • Each team shall be given a ‘Team Code’ by the Organizers on validation of their registration form.
  • The teams shall use their designated ‘Team Code’ for all correspondence with the Organizers.
  • The same team code must be used during the submission of the Memorials.
  • Screen-shot of the Registration Form and payment receipt should be sent to [email protected]

Memorial Submission

The following requirements for memorial must be strictly followed by the participants:

  • Each Team must send a soft copy of the memorials, (in .pdf format only), for evaluation by 20th September 2024 to [email protected] with the subject “Memorials for Team no- XYZ”. Request for extension of date-line will not be entertained.
  • Contestants are required to carry a hard copy of the memorial along with them at the time of competition.
  • All memorials submitted for the purposes of the Competition shall strictly adhere to the rules of the Competition. Each Team participating in the Competition must prepare one Memorial on behalf of the Appellant and one on behalf of the Respondent. Each team has to submit the soft copies of the Memorials from each side within the given time line.
  • Appellant memorials are required to have front Blue cover and Respondent memorials are required to have front Red cover. The memorials shall not contain any form of identification apart from the team code. The team code shall be shared via email after filling and confirming of registration form. If any such identification mark or symbol etc. which has the effect of identifying the team is found on the memorial, it shall result in instant disqualification of the team. Memorials submitted shall be final and will be used for presentation before judges. No contention as to this shall be entertained later.
  • While sending the softcopy of memorials in PDF format, the teams must name the file pertaining to the Respondent as ‘R’ accompanied by the team code and name the file pertaining to the Petitioner as ‘P’ accompanied by the team code. For example, Respondent of team 01 should name the PDF file as R01.
  • Teams are strictly prohibited from copying the content, case law, report or any research of any other team in any way at any stage of the Competition. If such a complaint is received and found genuine, the defaulting team shall be disqualified immediately.

Guidelines

Memorial Structure:

The memorial must have the following pages only:

  • Cover Page – The cover page shall contain the case title, year of the competition, name of the Court and team Code on top right corner.
  • Table of Contents
  • List of Abbreviations
  • Index of Authorities
  • Statement of Jurisdiction
  • Statement of Facts
  • Issues Raised
  • Summary of Arguments
  • Pleadings /Arguments Advanced
  • Prayer Team Code: The team code must be ascribed on the top right corner of the cover page.

Content Specification

The following content specifications must be strictly adhered to:

  • Font and Size (General) – Times New Roman, 12 pts
  • Line Spacing (General) – 1.5 lines
  • Font and Size (Footnotes) – Times New Roman, 10 pts
  • Line Spacing (Footnotes) – Single line
  • Page Margins – 1 inch on all sides
  • The Hard Copies of the Memorial shall be printed on only one side.
  • The citation should be in compliance with the 20th edition of Bluebook.

Evaluation Criteria for Memorials

  • Evidence of Original Thought: 10 Marks
  • Knowledge of Law and Facts: 10 Marks
  • Proper and Articulate Analysis: 10 Marks
  • Correct format and Citation: 10 Marks
  • Extent and Use of Research: 10 Marks
  • Total: 50 Marks

Rules for Oral Rounds

The match up of teams in the Preliminary Rounds shall be determined on the basis of draw of lots. Draw of lots and Memorial Exchange shall take place after the Inaugural Ceremony on 28th September 2024.

Preliminary Rounds

  • The preliminary rounds will be held on 28th September 2024. Each team will get a total of 15 minutes to present its case. This time will include rebuttal time. The division of time per speaker is left to the discretion of the team, subject to with a minimum time of 5 minutes per speaker and not more than 10 minutes per speaker. Rebuttals can be made between not more than 2 minutes.
  • The oral arguments should be confined to the issues presented in the memorial. The researcher may accompany the speakers during the oral rounds. The speakers can provide copies of the compendium, only if the same is permitted by the Panel of Judges in their respective court rooms. The winners of the preliminary rounds shall qualify for the Final Rounds.

Final Round

  • Each team will get 20 minutes to present its case which will include rebuttal time (if permitted by the judge(s)). Each speaker should speak for a minimum of 8 minutes.
  • This will be a knockout round. The organizers will decide which team will be competing against whom. Number of teams that would qualify for the final round could be changed depending upon the number of teams registered.

Marking Criteria

  • Preparation and familiarity with facts: 20 Marks
  • Structure of Legal Argument: 20 Marks
  • Knowledge & Application of Law: 20 Marks
  • Organization, Presentation, Speaking Ability: 10 Marks
  • Responsiveness to Questions: 10 Marks
  • Persuasiveness and Advocacy: 10 Marks
  • Courtroom Etiquette: 10 Marks
  • Total: 100 Marks

General Rules

  • In case of evaluation of all the Rounds, the Memorial Marks shall not be included to decide the merit.
  • But in case a tie takes place in the Preliminary Rounds or Final Rounds, the marks of the Memorials shall be the basis for deciding the winner.
  • The decision of the judges with regard to the outcome of the rounds shall be final.

Scouting

Teams shall not be allowed to observe the orals of another team, unless they have been officially knocked-out of the competition. Scouting is strictly prohibited. Scouting by any team shall entail instant disqualification.

Awards and Certificate

  • The winner of the Final Round will be awarded the trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 6000.
  • Runners-up of the Final Round will be awarded the trophy and a cash prize of Rs.3000.
  • The team with the highest memorial score will be awarded the trophy of ‘Best researcher’ and a cash prize of Rs. 1500.
  • ‘Best Mooter’ will be awarded the trophy of ‘Best Mooter’ and a cash prize of Rs. 1500.
  • All other participants will receive a Certificate of participation.
