On June 7, 2017, the late Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon inaugurated this institution. Since then, Christ Academy Institute of Law (CAIL) has strived to transform law and legal processes into effective tools for social development, instilling in students and researchers a sense of duty to serve society through advocacy, legal services, legislation, law reforms, and related endeavors.

About the Opportunity

Christ Academy Institute of Law and CAIL Mediation Committee proudly presents the 1st InterCollegiate Mediation Competition 2025, an event designed to enhance students’ understanding of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) through the practice of mediation. This competition aims to provide law students with an opportunity to develop their negotiation and problem-solving skills while fostering a culture of amicable dispute resolution.

The Flagship Event of Venusta, the Mediation Competition, is a premier platform that equips future legal professionals with essential dispute-resolution skills. Participants will engage in structured negotiations guided by impartial mediators to foster dialogue, identify key issues, and reach amicable settlements. This competition aims to promote ADR awareness, enhance professional networking, and prepare future attorneys to contribute effectively to a more efficient and collaborative justice system.

Eligibility

Through mediation, a mediator—a third party who is impartial—assists the parties in settling their differences. A mediator helps disputing parties come to an amicable agreement by promoting dialogue, recognizing problems, and assisting parties in reaching a compromise. Skills development, education, ADR promotion, networking, cultural advancement, standards, recognition, and public awareness are all part of the competition’s many goals.

Together, these objectives support the development and adoption of alternative conflict resolution procedures in the legal system. It aims at providing a much achievable choice to resolve the concerns of families and preparing future attorneys with the skills required for them to be active cogs in to smooth functioning of justice in our system.

Team Composition

Open to all law students enrolled in a recognized university. Three students will make up each team, with one mediator and two team members serving as the bargaining pair, also known as the “Mediating Pair.” Throughout the competition, one team member will be assigned to the role of Mediator, and this role will not change. A client and their counsel will be represented by the other two team members, who will comprise the mediating pair. Up to 3 teams from an Institute are allowed to participate. No cross-institutional teams allowed

Dress Code

Each and every participant must follow the formal dress code, which means they must dress in Formal business attire.

Rules & Regulations

  • The official language of the competition is English.
  • Participants must maintain decorum and follow ethical mediation practices
  • The three team members ought to be split up into smaller groups: a negotiating team with one mediator and two members who will act as the client and counsel.
  • Each team’s mediators and mediating teams would compete independently. Two mediating teams and two mediators will
  • participate in each round of mediated negotiations.
  • The team should be split up into the following two sub-teams: one mediator and a mediating team, which would consist of two people who would act as the client and counsel.
  • If necessary, the team or teams may take notes throughout the mediation session and utilize them for reference. Mediation sessions may not be recorded on audio or video.
  • It is totally forbidden to bring electronic devices inside the conference room during the session.
  • Ten minutes prior to each competition round, each team’s private information would be shared. Prior to disclosing the
  • private information, the teams will be drawn at random to choose which side they will represent. (tentative)
  • Throughout the competition, participants are not allowed to share any private information with other competitors. Any such information disclosed to other competitors before or following their round would result in instant disqualification from the competition, with no room for appeal.

Competiton Rounds

There will be three stages to the competition: the preliminary round, the semifinal round, and the final round.

Registration fees

The registration fee shall be Rs. 1500/- for each team. That is the Mediator, Client & Counsel together.
