About the Organisation

The Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, is a premier legal institution established in 2016 by an Act of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha. Over the years, HPNLU has actively contributed to the legal field through academic research, policy discussions, and competitions promoting excellence in legal scholarship.

The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property Rights (CAIIPR) at HPNLU focuses on the intersection of Intellectual Property Law and Artificial Intelligence (AI), fostering research and discussions on cutting-edge developments in these fields.

About the Event

The National Virtual Intellectual Property Rights Essay Writing Competition 2025 is organized by HPNLU’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property Rights (CAIIPR).

This competition aims to encourage students, scholars, and legal professionals to engage with critical Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) issues in the modern era, especially in the context of AI and recent legislative developments.

Eligibility

Open to undergraduate and postgraduate law students, Ph.D. scholars, and LL.M. candidates from any recognised university in India.

Theme

Participants can submit essays on one of the following themes:

  1. Legal Accountability for AI-Driven Intellectual Property Infringements: An Analysis of International and Indian Laws
  2. Effect of Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023: Decriminalization of IP Law

Submission Categories

  • Single Author Submissions
  • Co-authorship (Maximum two authors per submission)

Prizes

  • 1st Place: ₹7,000
  • 2nd Place: ₹5,000
  • 3rd Place: ₹3,000
  • Publication Opportunity: Selected essays will be considered for publication in SCC Online journal, subject to their editorial process.
  • E-certificates: Will be provided to all participants.

Formatting Guidelines

  • File Format: MS Word (.docx)
  • Font: Times New Roman
  • Font Size: 12 (for main text), 10 (for footnotes)
  • Spacing: 1.5 (main text), single spacing (footnotes)
  • Citation Style: SCC Online or Bluebook (20th edition)

Selection Guidelines

Submissions will be judged based on:

  • Originality and Innovation (30%)
  • Legal Reasoning and Argumentation (30%)
  • Clarity and Structure (20%)
  • Research and Citation Accuracy (20%)

Submission Guidelines

  • Essays must be original and unpublished.
  • Plagiarism above 10% will lead to immediate disqualification.
  • The word limit for essays is 3000-4000 words (excluding footnotes).
  • The essay must not contain any identifying information of the authors within the document.

Registration and Submission Deadline (Important Dates)

  • Last Date for Submission: 30th April 2025 (11:59 P.M. IST)
  • Results Announcement: 15th May 2025

200 for students, Ph.D. scholars, and LL.M. candidates.

  • A cover page including the author’s name, institution, email, and contact details must be attached.
