Delhi High Court Gets New Chief Justice as DK Upadhyay Takes Oath

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya was officially sworn in today as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in a formal ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan. The oath of office was administered by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, marking the beginning of his tenure at one of the country’s most significant judicial institutions.
Appointment and Transfer
Justice Upadhyaya’s appointment follows the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation on January 7, 2025, for his transfer from the Bombay High Court, where he had been serving as Chief Justice since July 29, 2023.
According to a government notification, the President of India, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, approved his transfer under Article 222(1) of the Constitution, directing him to assume charge at the Delhi High Court.
Career and Judicial Journey
Justice Upadhyaya’s legal career spans over three decades. A graduate of Lucknow University, he earned his law degree in 1991 and began practising at the Allahabad High Court, focusing on civil and constitutional law.
His judicial career began on November 21, 2011, when he was appointed an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court. He was later elevated as a permanent judge on August 6, 2013, and eventually took on leadership roles in the judiciary.
At the Bombay High Court, his tenure was marked by efficiency and timely judgments, earning him a reputation for his clarity of thought and commitment to justice.

Justice Upadhyaya takes charge of the Delhi High Court at a time when it is facing a heavy caseload, handling some of the most complex legal and constitutional matters in the country.
In his address after the swearing-in ceremony, Justice Upadhyaya expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and reiterated his dedication to upholding the principles of justice and the rule of law. He emphasised his commitment to:
