MSME Registration in India

Share & spread the love

The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector forms the backbone of India’s economy, contributing significantly to employment generation, exports, and industrial output. Recognising the importance of this sector, the Government of India introduced MSME Registration to formalise and empower these enterprises through financial, legal, and operational benefits. In 2020, the Ministry of MSME revamped the registration process by launching the Udyam Registration portal, making the process simpler and more accessible.

What is MSME Registration?

MSME registration is a government-recognised certification for enterprises classified under the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006. It aims to provide formal recognition to businesses and enable them to access a wide range of benefits, including financial support, tax rebates, and priority in government procurement.

Key Highlights of MSME Registration

  1. Recognition Certificate: Enterprises receive a certificate with a unique identification number (Udyam Registration Number).
  2. Dynamic QR Code: The certificate includes a QR code for instant verification of enterprise details.
  3. No Renewal Required: The registration is valid for the lifetime of the enterprise.
  4. Simplified Process: The updated Udyam Registration eliminates paperwork, requiring only Aadhaar and basic business details.

MSME Classification

In 2020, the government revised the classification of MSMEs under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan package. The new classification eliminates the distinction between manufacturing and service sectors and introduces composite criteria based on investment and turnover.

Type of EnterpriseInvestmentTurnover
Micro< ₹1 Crore< ₹5 Crore
Small< ₹10 Crore< ₹50 Crore
Medium< ₹50 Crore< ₹250 Crore

This reclassification expanded the scope of MSMEs, allowing more businesses to benefit from government schemes.
