About the Job

Tata Steel is seeking an IP Counsel to manage and strengthen its intellectual property portfolio. The role involves collaborating with inventors and research teams, conducting patent searches, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, managing intellectual property assets, and supporting innovation initiatives through strategic IP guidance.

Eligibility

• LL.B. or LL.M. with specialization in Intellectual Property Law preferred.
• B.Tech., M.Tech., M.Sc., Ph.D., or Research Fellow qualification.
• Preference for candidates with a background in:
  • Metallurgy
  • Physics
  • Mechanical Engineering
• Registered Patent Agent qualification preferred.

Responsibilities

Intellectual Property Portfolio Development

• Strategically curate and expand intellectual property assets in alignment with business objectives and market opportunities.

Research and Development Support

• Support research and development teams in ideation, innovation, and commercialization while safeguarding intellectual property rights.

Patent Drafting and Prosecution

• Interview inventors to identify patentable innovations.
• Conduct prior art and patentability searches.
• Draft patent specifications, claims, and supporting documentation.
• Prepare and file patent applications.
• Respond to First Examination Reports (FERs) and office actions from patent authorities across jurisdictions.
• Attend hearings relating to patent matters.

Patent Searches and Analysis

• Conduct State-of-the-Art, Freedom-to-Operate (FTO), Invalidity, and other patent searches.
• Perform patent landscaping and technology scouting exercises.
• Monitor emerging intellectual property trends and competitive patent activity.

Patent Audit and Due Diligence

• Conduct patent audits to assess portfolio strength, compliance, and strategic alignment.
• Undertake intellectual property and technical due diligence assignments.

Contract and Stakeholder Management

• Negotiate research agreements, confidentiality agreements, and non-disclosure agreements with research partners.
• Coordinate with internal stakeholders, inventors, external attorneys, and research collaborators.

IP Portfolio Management

• Manage intellectual property workflows through AQX Corporate and related portfolio management systems.
• Maintain records and oversee patent lifecycle management activities.

Awareness and Training

• Conduct intellectual property awareness sessions to promote innovation and best practices across the organization.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of the Indian Patents Act, 1970 and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).
• Expertise in patent searching, Freedom-to-Operate (FTO), and invalidity analysis.
• Experience using intellectual property databases and business intelligence tools.
• Patent drafting and prosecution expertise.
• National and international patent filing experience, including PCT filings.
• Patent portfolio management skills.
• Patent landscaping and IP audit experience.
• Ability to conduct intellectual property and technical due diligence.
• Experience in technology scouting and data mining; programming skills would be an advantage.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical and collaborative abilities.
• Exposure to intellectual property, business, and technical databases.
• Willingness to travel for conferences, events, and information-gathering activities.
