Eligibility
- A law degree with a strong professional foundation in commercial and contract law.
- Significant experience in commercial contract drafting, review, and negotiation.
- Previous people-management experience, including direct responsibility for managing and developing professionals.
- Fluency in written and spoken English, with the ability to draft and negotiate sophisticated commercial agreements.
- Strong commercial judgment and the ability to distinguish material legal risks from manageable commercial issues.
- Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced multinational environment while managing competing priorities.
- Experience handling contracts or working with stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions.
- Willingness and ability to use AI-enabled tools and technology in day-to-day legal work.
- A strong focus on processes and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
People Leadership

- Lead, coach, and develop a team of approximately 5–10 legal professionals.
- Establish clear priorities, expectations, and effective work allocation.
- Provide guidance and escalation support for complex negotiations and contractual issues.
- Maintain high standards of quality, consistency, responsiveness, and commercial judgment.
- Develop the team’s ability to use AI tools responsibly, ensuring appropriate human review and validation.
Customer Contracting
- Oversee the review, drafting, and negotiation of customer contracts, primarily relating to ocean transportation and international logistics services.
- Personally support or lead negotiations involving complex, high-value, strategically important, or escalated contracts.
- Ensure compliance with contracting policies, templates, playbooks, approval processes, and risk parameters.
- Collaborate with commercial, product, and other legal teams to resolve contractual issues and facilitate the timely conclusion of customer agreements.
Technology and Process Improvement
- Manage a high-volume contracting environment while balancing turnaround expectations with legal quality and risk management.
- Improve contracting workflows, templates, playbooks, escalation mechanisms, and standard contractual positions.
- Use data and operational insights to identify recurring negotiation issues, bottlenecks, and opportunities for standardisation or automation.
- Integrate technology and AI into contracting processes while maintaining legal judgment and accountability.
Stakeholder Management
- Make pragmatic decisions when legal and commercial considerations compete.
- Identify matters requiring escalation and enable the team to resolve routine issues independently.
- Communicate effectively with senior stakeholders across different cultures and jurisdictions.
- Coach team members through difficult negotiations rather than routinely taking over their matters.
Preferred Experience
Experience in the shipping, transportation, or logistics industry is highly desirable, particularly in the following areas:
- Ocean carriers.
- Freight forwarders and Non-Vessel Operating Common Carriers (NVOCCs).
- Airlines and air-cargo businesses.
Candidates from adjacent sectors may also be considered relevant, including:
- Marine insurance.
- Commodities and international trading.
- Conglomerates with substantial international logistics procurement activities.
- General logistics and transportation businesses.
Candidates without direct industry experience may also be suitable if they possess strong commercial contracting expertise and a credible understanding of the shipping and logistics business.
