They do this in multiple formats and languages, through their open-access website, and with the help of their network of community-based organisations, their Samvidhaan Fellows, and their Access to Justice Network of law students and volunteers.

About the Job

Nyaaya is looking for an experienced lawyer to manage the Samvidhaan Fellowship in Karnataka. They are looking for someone who is passionate about changing the way citizens interact with the law. They should be fluent in Kannada, have experience in litigation in Karnataka, plan and implement collaborative projects with governmental and non-governmental organisations in Karnataka. This role will primarily support the implementation of the Karnataka Fellowship programme, including overseeing community engagement, outreach, grievance redressal and litigation, and documentation of our work in Karnataka.

Eligibility

Essential

  • At least five years of litigation experience in Karnataka.
  • Fluency (particularly in writing) in Kannada and English is mandatory for this role. 
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Ability to take ownership of a project and manage end-to-end execution.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team

Desirable

  • Previous experience in Kannada research and content writing.
  • Experience working on fellowship programmes, community-based initiatives, or grassroots legal projects will be an added advantage.

Responsibilities

Your primary task will be to support, guide, and engage fellows, including contributing to training sessions, content review, and coordination related to fellowship activities, including overseeing legal help desks and litigation. This includes:

  • Supporting the day-to-day functioning of the Karnataka Fellowship by assisting with fellows’ onboarding, orientation, and ongoing engagement during the fellowship period
  • Undertaking outreach to identify and build partnerships with local organisations, legal aid providers, community groups, and collectives to strengthen the fellowship and ensure a steady flow of work for the Fellows.
  • Working with fellows and community members to identify legal issues on the ground and support the creation of relevant legal information and resources.
  • Creating content for campaigns (both online and offline) and working with the Access to Justice Lead and Karnataka Fellowship Manager to ensure the reach of Nyaaya’s content.
  • Coordinating with the Nyaaya team and Samvidhaan Fellows to ensure timely responses on the Ask Nyaaya Whatsapp Helpline.
  • Facilitating connections between community members and appropriate legal aid or support mechanisms, including coordination with partner organisations where required.
  • Planning, finalising and implementing collaborations with governmental and non-governmental organisations in Karnataka.
  • Supporting the documentation of the fellowship, including reports, case studies, community stories, and content reflecting the work and learnings of the fellowship.

This position is based out of Bengaluru.
