Duration of the internship and timing

15th July, 2022 to 15th August, 2022

First impressions, first-day formalities, infrastructure

The office of the District Child Protection Unit was a small office with ample space. This includes both the Juvenile Justice Board(JJB) and the Child Welfare Committee(CWC). I was called to the office at 11 am . So I reached early that day at around 10:30 am.

Firstly, I was introduced to all the office staff. DCPO Ma’am introduced me to the Chairperson and other members of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

Main tasks

As District Child Protection Unit deals with almost all child-related matters. I was given similar jobs.

I was made well acquainted with the functioning of the District Child Protection Unit, Child Welfare Committee and Juvenile Justice Board established under Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and rendered assistance to the unit. I was also engaged in counselling of Child in Need of Care and Protection and rescue operation with Kamrup Childline.

I also did researched on the new Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act 2015.

Work environment and people

The work environment was great I never felt like I was in a new place to work with some new people. The office staff was really helpful. Their approach was warm and welcoming. So it made the internship process easier.

Best things

Since this was my first internship, I learned a lot about the difference between the court process and the process followed by the Juvenile Justice Board and the Child Welfare Committee.

Bad things

No bad things

Stipend

No stipend

Accommodation

Guwahati is my hometown

Other info

Working in the District Child Protection Unit made me realise the dismal situation in India regarding compliance with the rules related to child rights. I realised how pertinent it is for people to report against such violations. To sum up an internship at the office of the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) has given me the ability to think critically, rather than simply expressing sorrow and grief against the happenings of the world. Overall, the experience was deeply insightful.
