Standard Chartered is hiring a Senior Legal Counsel – Group Commercial Legal to support and lead within the Group Commercial Legal Centre of Excellence (COE).
The role involves team leadership, commercial and technology contract management, third-party risk oversight, and strategic legal advisory across global procurement and outsourcing matters.
Job Summary
The Senior Legal Counsel will:
- Lead and manage a team of Legal Counsels, providing supervision, coaching, and escalation support
- Support the Head, Legal COE in executing strategy and operational transformation
- Oversee global procurement contracts (technology and non-technology)
- Provide strategic advice on legal and operational risk
- Drive improvements in contract processes, playbooks, and templates
- Promote a culture of regulatory compliance and good business conduct
Responsibilities
Strategy & Leadership
- Support execution of the Group Commercial Legal strategy
- Develop best-in-class legal service delivery models
- Drive talent development, performance management, and succession planning
- Engage stakeholders for continuous improvement and feedback
Commercial & Technology Contract Management
- Review, draft, and negotiate global procurement contracts including:
- Software, SaaS, cloud and technology agreements
- Market data and subscription licenses
- Hardware, maintenance and support contracts
- Business process outsourcing arrangements
- Professional services agreements
- Intragroup servicing arrangements
- Advise on outsourcing, technology procurement, data protection, and operational resilience
- Provide risk analysis and mitigation strategies
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Group Contracts Policy and Third-Party Risk Management Framework
- Maintain and update Department Operating Instructions
- Provide training to legal teams and stakeholders
- Manage external counsel appointments and legal spend
Risk & Dispute Management
- Provide guidance on legal and operational risk identification
- Support resolution of vendor disputes and pre-litigation matters
- Coordinate regulatory remediation and change initiatives
Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with:
- Supply Chain Management
- Enterprise and Country Legal teams
- Business and Global Functions
- Disputes & Government Investigations Legal Team
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law
Skills & Experience
- Strong knowledge of technology and commercial contracts, IP, and data protection
- Experience in outsourcing and procurement (preferred)
- Experience in banking sector (preferred but not mandatory)
- Strong people management and leadership skills
- Ability to negotiate complex commercial contracts
- Strong analytical, strategic, and communication skills
- Good commercial judgment and ability to manage complex issue sets
- Experience with cloud, e-commerce, data privacy, and information security matters
