RGNUL Hosts National Moot Court Competition on Consumer Protection Laws 2026 in Collaboration with Ministry of Consumer Affairs

The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab, (RGNUL) in collaboration with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, New Delhi, organized the RGNUL National Moot Court Competition on Consumer Protection Laws, 2026 on 20th-21st February 2026. The objective of the competition was to engage students with consumer protection jurisprudence and sensitize them to the emerging challenges faced by consumers in an increasingly digital and market-driven economy.
The competition was organized by the RGNUL Moot Court Committee (RMCC) under the guidance of Faculty coordinator, Dr. Jaswinder Kaur, Assistant Professor of Law, and the Centre for Competition and Consumer Protection Law (CCCPL), RGNUL. It was conducted in a hybrid format, with the preliminary rounds held online and the advanced rounds conducted on the university campus. The moot proposition, prepared by Practicing Advocate Abhinav Gaur, Allahabad High Court, revolved around contemporary legal issues in consumer protection laws such as dark patterns, misleading advertisements, data protection, and product liability, offering participants a platform to engage with evolving regulatory and judicial perspectives.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 42 teams representing law universities across the country. Of these, 8 teams advanced to the campus rounds, i.e., Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, Christ University, Bangalore, Symbiosis Law School, Pune, University School of Law, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, UILS Chandigarh, Faculty of Law, Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, Dr. B.R Ambedkar National Law University, Sonipat, Government Law College, Mumbai. 4 teams qualified for the semi-finals, Government Law College, Mumbai, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, Christ University, Bangalore. The teams from Government Law College, Mumbai, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University reached in the final rounds.
The team from Government Law College, Mumbai -was adjudged as runners-up and the team from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University was declared as the winner. The Award for the Best Speaker Female and Male categories were presented to Punya Chandana and Shivam Kapoor respectively, from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. Additionally, the team from OP Jindal Global University, were awarded the Best Memorial category.
The valedictory session commenced with the Moot Court Report, presented by Madhumita J., Student Convenor of the RGNUL Moot Court Committee. Thereafter, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Professor (Dr.) Jai S. Singh delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the importance of consumer welfare and expressing gratitude to the esteemed bench for gracing the occasion.
The final rounds were presided over by an esteemed panel of judges. Hon’ble (Mr.) Justice Pankaj Jain, Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, who delivered an address to the gathering, commended the students and encouraged them to continue participating in moot court competitions, for developing the art of advocacy. The Hon’ble judge motivated the participants for innovating. and inspired boundary-pushing innovation: “Progress depends on unreasonable visionaries who reshape the world.” `
Additionally, Hon’ble (Mr.) Justice Raj Shekhar Atri President, Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chandigarh took the podium to congratulate the participants. The Hon’ble judge, while drawing from his bench experience, stressed on robust enforcement mechanisms in promoting fair trade practices. Thereafter, Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Ranga Registrar, J.C Bose University of Science & Technology, Faridabad applauded the quality of arguments presented by both teams in the final rounds, and delved into the importance of mooting and moot court competitions as vital training grounds for future legal luminaries.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Ivneet Kaur Walia, (Officiating) Registrar, RGNUL, who along with Faculty Coordinator Dr. Jaswinder Kaur, Dr. Shiva Satish Sharda, Dr. Manpreet Kaur, Dr. Basant Singh, Mr. Anubhav, Mr. Sisir, Dr. Ankit Srivastava, and Dr. Ishita Sharma and Dr. Sangeeta Taak expressed gratitude to the judges, Ministry of Consumer Affairs for the sponsorship, and the student coordinator Madhumita J., along with Student Co-Convenors Jaipreet Singh and Archi Chaturvedi were appreciated for successful conducting of the programme.
