NUALS Legal Aid Clinic Completes Survey under NALSA’s ‘Community Mediation’ Initiative

The NUALS Legal Aid Clinic has completed a comprehensive field survey across all 24 wards of Edathala Grama Panchayat, Ernakulam, to identify disputes and complaints that may be suitable for resolution through Community Mediation under the Mediation Act, 2023.

The survey was conducted under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) initiative, “Community Mediation: Towards a Litigation-Free Rural India,” with the active participation of student volunteers from the NUALS Legal Aid Clinic, headed by Dr. Aparna Sreekumar, Assistant Professor and Faculty Coordinator, NUALS Legal Aid Clinic. The student volunteers visited different parts of the Panchayat to gather ground-level information and understand the nature of disputes and local dispute-resolution needs within the community.
The field exercise received active support from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Ernakulam. Para-Legal Volunteers (PLVs) of the DLSA, along with Ward Members, members of the Community Development Society (CDS), ASHA workers and Anganwadi teachers, extended valuable assistance throughout the survey.
Their local knowledge and established community networks facilitated access to residents and helped ensure comprehensive coverage of all 24 wards of Edathala Grama Panchayat. The field survey is expected to provide valuable insights into the nature of community-level disputes and help identify matters that may be amenable to resolution through community-based mediation.
The initiative seeks to strengthen access to alternative dispute resolution mechanisms at the grassroots level and promote the use of mediation as an accessible and collaborative means of resolving disputes within communities.
