Dr Pallab Das Becomes First Legal Academic to Receive the Professor Emmanuel Gaillard International Arbitration Scholarship

Dr Pallab Das, Founding Dean and Associate Professor of Law at the School of Law, Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM), Bhubaneswar, has been named a recipient of the Professor Emmanuel Gaillard International Arbitration Scholarship — becoming, by CIMA’s account, the first legal academic to be conferred this honour.

The scholarship, instituted by the Center for International Mediators and Arbitrators (CIMA) in memory of Professor Emmanuel Gaillard’s contributions to international arbitration, grants recipients a fully sponsored place on CIMA’s International Arbitration Programme. The September 2026 cohort will combine practitioner-led lectures, case analysis, collaborative exercises and arbitral simulations for participants drawn from across the global arbitration community.

Dr Das brings to the programme a career built almost entirely around maritime and international arbitration. He holds a PhD in Maritime Arbitration Law from the National Law University Odisha, an LLM in International Commercial and Maritime Law from Swansea University, and a postdoctoral D.Litt from CINEC, Sri Lanka. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London) and has been empanelled as an International Mediator with the Singapore International Mediation Centre. He was recently appointed Senior Advisor to UNIPLAT, Switzerland, an initiative affiliated with the United Nations, for 2026–27.

As Founding Dean of the School of Law at CUTM, Dr Das has taught and supervised research across international commercial arbitration, maritime law and dispute resolution, and has coached student teams for moot court competitions including the Vis International Arbitration Moot. He has authored or edited several books and book chapters on arbitration and maritime law, including Contemporary Perspectives in International Arbitration: Decoding Global Trends (Thomson Reuters Publication), alongside Maritime Arbitration: Judicial Trends and Practice (Whitesmann Publication), and numerous journal articles and conference papers on the subject. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Business Law Review and has reviewed maritime project proposals for the International Association of Maritime Universities under the Nippon Foundation.

The scholarship adds to a growing list of recognitions for Dr Das, who has previously received the Mid-Career Scholar Award (Appa Education and Research Foundation, 2025) and the Leadership Excellence Award for Higher Education (ObserveNow, 2025), among others.
