About The Department of Laws, Panjab University

The Department of Laws, Panjab University was originally established at Lahore in 1889, re-established at Shimla in 1948, and finally re-located at the Panjab University Campus at Chandigarh in 1959. Its alumni include Judges of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and High Courts, Union Cabinet Ministers, State Chief Ministers, Cabinet Ministers, and other legal luminaries.

Through the years the Department of Laws at Panjab University has made a worthy contribution to the legal landscape of the country as evidenced by its illustrious alumni as well as by the strength of its legal research and academic merit. It is with utmost pleasure that the Department invites the participation of teams from various law Institutes/Universities of India in the 2nd edition of the National Moot Court Competition being organized in association with the Competition Commission of India.

About the Competition

Department of Laws, Panjab University is thrilled to announce the second edition of the CCI-Department of Laws National MootCourt Competition, 2024 from 29th March 2024 – 31st March 2024. This flagship event has been devised with the aim of creating an opportunity for learning the development of jurisprudence on emerging trends in competition law, besides armoring the upcoming generations of the legal fraternity with research and oratory skills.

The Moot Proposition of the Competition will revolve around Competition Law. In the past, the Department of Laws, Panjab University has successfully conducted the first edition of the CCI-Department of Laws National Moot Court Competition in 2022, which witnessed significant participation of law students from all over India.

About Competition Commission of India

“To promote and sustain an enabling competition culture through engagement and enforcement that would inspire businesses to be fair, competitive and innovative; enhance consumer welfare and support economic growth”. The Competition Act, 2002, as amended by the Competition (Amendment) Act, of 2007, follows the philosophy of modern competition laws. The Act prohibits anti-competitive agreements, and abuse of dominant position by enterprises and regulates combinations (acquisition, acquiring of control, and M&A), which cause or are likely to cause an appreciable adverse effect on competition within India.

Prizes

  • Winning Team: Cash prize of Rs. 45,000 and Trophy
  • 1st Runners Up Cash prize of Rs. 33,000 and Trophy
  • Best Memorial: Cash prize of Rs. 12,000
  • Best Speaker/Advocate: Cash prize of Rs. 10,000
  • **Certificates of Participation shall be awarded to the participants on completion of the competition.

Important Dates

  • Commencement of Online Registration- 15th January 2024
  • The last date for Online Registration along with registration fees for the memorial qualifier round – 25th February 2024
  • Last date for seeking clarifications – 20th February 2024
  • Release of final clarifications- 22nd February 2024
  • Last Date for Submission of soft copy of memorials – 29th February 2024 (11:59 pm)
  • Result of Memorial Qualifier Round- 11th March 2024
  • The last date for the payment of remaining registration fees by the teams qualifying for the oral rounds- 17th March 2024
  • Arrival of Participants and Submission of hard copy of memorials – 29th March 2024 (2:30 pm onwards)
  • Orientation- 29th March 2024 (4:00 pm)
  • Preliminary & Quarter-final rounds- 30th March 2024
  • Semi-finals, Finals, Valedictory & Prize distribution- 31st March 2024
