Sangit Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, is organising ENSEMBLE 2027 in collaboration with St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata; The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata; Centre for Technology, Entertainment and Sports Law (CTESL), NUJS; Kolkata Anandam for Equality and Justice (KAEJ), Kolkata; and Unmute.help.

The conference seeks to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue on equality, inclusion, dignity, safety, accessibility, and social justice within the performing arts, while engaging with the enduring ideas and legacy of Rabindranath Tagore.

About ENSEMBLE 2027

ENSEMBLE 2027 is a two-day interdisciplinary national conference centred on “Performing Equality: Reimagining Inclusive Artistic Spaces in the Spirit of Tagore”. The conference will explore contemporary challenges and possibilities surrounding inclusive and equitable artistic spaces, bringing together perspectives from performing arts, law, education, policy, disability studies, gender studies, and allied disciplines.

The conference will be conducted in Hybrid Mode on 4–5 January 2027.

Conference Themes

The Call for Papers invites submissions broadly covering the following themes:

  • Tagore & Inclusive Performing Arts – dignity, equality, humanism, marginalised voices, gender, identity, social justice, and Tagore’s vision of inclusive artistic spaces.
  • Sexual Harassment in Performing Institutions – harassment and power hierarchies, Guru–Shishya relationships, accountability, safe creative spaces, and the intersections of arts and law.
  • Disability & Accessibility in Performing Arts Spaces – inclusion of differently-abled individuals, universal accessibility, adaptive choreography, assistive technologies, and disability representation.
  • Mental Health, Trauma & Well-being of Performing Artists – psychological impact of harassment and discrimination, trauma, resilience, and supportive environments.
  • Transgender & LGBTQIA+ Inclusion in Performing Arts – visibility of transgender artists, gender diversity, inclusive casting and choreography, and LGBTQIA+ narratives.
  • Education, Policies, Laws & Institutional Practices – gender sensitisation, safe campuses and performing arts institutions, POSH implementation, inclusive curricula, ethics, professionalism, and policy reforms.

  • Abstract Submission: 17 August – 17 September 2026
  • Notification of Acceptance: 30 September 2026 onwards
  • Registration: 1 – 15 October 2026
  • Conference Dates: 4 – 5 January 2027
