National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is inviting applications for multiple Research Fellowships across three categories for scholars working in law, social sciences and public policy, with the fellowships commencing in January 2027.

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), commonly referred to as the National Law School (NLS), is a state law university in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. Established under the Karnataka Act No. 22 of 1986, it is widely regarded as one of the most elite institutions in India for legal education and has consistently been ranked first in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for law.

About the Fellowships

Applications are invited for the following fellowships on a contract basis:

  • Graduate Research Fellowship – 10 positions
  • NLSIU Postdoctoral Fellowship – 5 positions
  • University Research Fellowship – 5 positions

The programme welcomes both interdisciplinary and disciplinary research.

The University seeks to support research that advances fresh theoretical perspectives and contributes to knowledge systems, as well as research that generates empirical evidence, identifies pathways for institutional and system reform, and connects scholarship, policy and practice.

Remuneration

  • Graduate Research Fellowship: Rs 50,000 per month
  • NLSIU Postdoctoral Fellowship: Rs 1,20,000 per month
  • University Research Fellowship: Rs 2,00,000 per month

The fellowship remuneration will be determined based on the candidate’s educational background, qualifications, relevant experience and overall suitability for the fellowship.

Additional Information

The fellowships are intended for scholars at different stages of their academic and professional journey.

The Research Fellowships Programme builds on NLSIU’s Academic Fellowship programme and was established in 2025–26 with an expanded focus on research, interdisciplinary engagement and scholarship.

Location

NLSIU Campus

Fellows are expected to be on campus during their fellowship period.
