About the Job

SM Legal Advocates & Solicitors is hiring Junior Associate/Associate to join its expanding Tax Litigation and Advisory team. The role offers an opportunity to work on indirect tax litigation, legal research, drafting, and court proceedings under the guidance of experienced advocates.

Eligibility

Candidates must:

• Hold an LL.B., B.A. LL.B., or B.B.A. LL.B. degree from a recognised institution.
• Be enrolled with the Bar Council of West Bengal (mandatory).
• Have 1–3 years of post-qualification experience in the tax domain.
• Possess a strong understanding of GST, Service Tax, Customs, and Excise laws.

Skills Required

Candidates should possess:

• Excellent legal research and analytical skills.
• Strong legal drafting and communication abilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple matters.
• Attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
• Proficiency in legal databases and research tools.
• Good command of English and the local language.

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

• Briefing senior advocates on case matters and preparing case summaries and updates.
• Conducting legal research on indirect tax laws, case laws, statutes, and regulations.
• Appearing independently for case mentioning before courts and handling procedural matters.
• Drafting legal opinions, writ petitions, appeals, replies, rejoinders, and other legal documents.
• Coordinating with senior advocates for review and finalisation of legal documents.
• Assisting during court hearings by preparing hearing notes and case briefs.
• Coordinating with clients for hearing preparation.
• Maintaining organised case files, monitoring case progress, and tracking important deadlines.
