About Saveetha School of Law

Saveetha School of Law, a constituent institution of Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS), is organising the Debate Competition as part of LAW FEAST 2026. SSL was established in 2009 and offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in law. It is recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

SIMATS was established in 1986 by the Saveetha Medical and Educational Trust and is a multidisciplinary institution offering programmes in fields including Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Law, Nursing, and Physiotherapy.

Details of the Event

The Debate Competition is a premier legal debating event conducted as part of LAW FEAST 2026 by the Saveetha School of Law. The competition provides a platform for law students to engage in constitutional and personal law issues through structured parliamentary debate, enhancing legal research, advocacy, critical thinking, and public speaking skills.

  • Format: Indian Parliamentary Debate, 1-on-1 format

Eligibility

College students are eligible to participate.

Theme / Official Motion

“This House believes that the exclusion of Renoncants from the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956, creates an unconstitutional class of citizens and violates Article 14 and Article 21.”

The competition focuses on constitutional and personal-law issues, particularly the legal status of Renoncants in Puducherry and their continued governance under the French Civil Code. It aims to develop legal research, advocacy, constitutional reasoning, critical thinking, public speaking, and parliamentary debating skills.

Competition Structure

  • Preliminary Round – All participants
  • Semi-Finals – Top 4 participants
  • Grand Finale – Top 2 participants

Government and Opposition sides will be announced five minutes before each round.
