About the Job

Barclays is hiring a Data Legal Counsel to support stakeholders on a broad range of data privacy and data governance matters, with a primary focus on India. The role involves working closely with Product Legal, Country Legal, Compliance, and other stakeholders to provide commercially viable legal advice while considering local regulatory requirements and operational needs.

Eligibility

Applicants should have:

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law.
• Qualification as a lawyer in India with relevant post-qualification experience, preferably at an established global financial institution or law firm.
• Experience advising on lawful basis identification, consent management, cross-border data transfers, regulatory requests, disclosure analysis, data retention, and other data privacy matters.
• Strong legal risk management and stakeholder communication skills.
• The ability to work independently while managing multiple stakeholders.
• A proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving.

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

• Providing day-to-day legal advice on data privacy and data management matters in India and escalating complex issues where required.
• Acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on data privacy and governance for legal and compliance stakeholders.
• Advising on privacy policies and consent wording for employees and clients across business divisions in India and GIFT City.
• Supporting procurement and sourcing teams on privacy-related contractual matters, including supplier agreements and outsourcing arrangements.
• Assisting with maintaining data inventories and supporting Data Transfer Impact Assessments (DTIAs) and Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs).
• Developing and implementing legal strategies for risk management and regulatory compliance.
• Providing legal advice on cybersecurity, intellectual property, data privacy incidents, and emerging technology matters.
• Preparing, reviewing, and updating legal documents, including data protection policies, cybersecurity protocols, and IP-related agreements.
• Conducting legal research on changes in applicable laws and regulations.
• Developing and delivering employee training on legal and regulatory requirements relating to cybersecurity, data privacy, intellectual property, and emerging technologies.
• Identifying legal and regulatory developments and advising stakeholders on compliance obligations.
• Managing legal risks, strengthening internal controls, and supporting governance initiatives.
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams and contributing to business objectives through legal guidance.
• Conducting complex legal analysis and effectively communicating legal advice to stakeholders.
