Bombay High Court Orders Takedown of Video Alleging Bisleri Water Was Made From Sewage

The Bombay High Court on Friday, October 30, 2026, granted ex-parte ad-interim reliefs in favour of Bisleri International Private Limited (“Bisleri”), restraining the circulation of defamatory and derogatory video falsely alleging that Bisleri packaged drinking water is manufactured using contaminated water. The Court directed the removal of the impugned video and their subsequent re-posts and copies from various social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter). Justice Arif S. Doctor passed the order on an Interim Application filed by Bisleri International Private Limited, seeking urgent protection against the publication and circulation of false, misleading and defamatory content concerning the quality, purity and safety of its packaged drinking water.

The dispute arose after Bisleri discovered, on 27 October, 2026, a video circulating on social media platforms wherein an individual made allegations that Bisleri packaged drinking water was sourced from drain water and sewage, and was being supplied to consumers after filtration. The video also depicted a manufacturing facility, falsely suggesting that the same was connected with Bisleri.
Bisleri submitted that the allegations were entirely false and baseless, and that the premises depicted in the video neither belonged to Bisleri nor was connected with any of its licensees, franchisees or co-packers. It further submitted that it holds a valid FSSAI Central License and that its manufacturing facilities are regularly audited by FSSAI-accredited agencies.
Upon perusing the Plaint and viewing the impugned video, the Court observed that a clear prima facie case of defamation, denigration and disparagement was made out. The Court specifically noted that the allegations in the video suggested that Bisleri was manufacturing and selling unsafe drinking water to unsuspecting consumers, and that what was particularly glaring was that the premises shown in the video were not even connected with Bisleri.
The Court further observed that the widespread publication and circulation of the video across various social media platforms justified Bisleri’s apprehension of further dissemination and amplification, which had the potential to cause immense and irreversible prejudice to its goodwill and reputation.

Accordingly, the Court granted ex-parte ad-interim reliefs directing the social media platform to remove and takedown the impugned video, including identified re-posts, re-shares and copies. The Court also restrained the persons responsible from further publishing, uploading, circulating or disseminating the impugned video or any other content repeating the defamatory allegations against Bisleri and its products.
Bisleri was represented by Mr. Virag Tulzapurkar, Senior Counsel, along with Mr. Hiren Kamod, Ms. Nidhish Mehrotra, Mr. Shwetank Tripathi, Ms. Sonam Pradhan, Ms. Hasti Parekh, Ms. Karishma Kantawala and Ms Medhavi Petkar instructed by ANM Global.
