The Legal Aid Centre conducts Avagahana as a vital component of its work to make the people aware of certain significant issues and bring it to their conscience, hence making them vigilant about the same. As a part of Avagahana’22, the Legal Aid Centre is organizing a panel discussion on the theme “Juvenile Justice in India and Juvenile Rehabilitation: Socio-Legal Implication for Children”.

About the Panel Discussion

The juvenile justice system around the world has always been intrinsically socio-legal because it was understood that the circumstances that contribute to juvenile offences must be addressed while the child is in the juvenile justice system, and this must be done within the broad scope of the law. With regard to the overall development of children, the Juvenile Justice System is the most progressive and enlightened system adopted by the world populace.

The main objective is to reform deviants and give care for children who are not safeguarded. As far as practicable, a child should be rehabilitated and restored to the family. Poverty, lack of resources for good education, mental health concerns, addiction, and peer pressure are all well-known factors that can make children vulnerable thereby, resulting in criminal behavior. Juvenile offenders, therefore, require a different approach than adult offenders.

The primary objective of the socio-legal approach is to not only provide attention and care to children, but also to keep them from committing crimes in the future. The socio-legal approach is essential because it recognizes that while children must accept responsibility for their actions, they also require opportunities to direct their lives in socially constructive ways. Along with facing criminal consequences under juvenile justice law, the child will also require education/vocational skills, drug and alcohol treatment, and family work.

The panel discussion shall enlighten the audience regarding the same and help build an awareness around the Juvenile Justice System in India.
