About Prerana Organisation
Prerana is a civil society organization that started working in the redlight areas of Mumbai in 1986 and serves the actual and potential women and children victims of commercial sexual exploitation & trafficking (CSE&T). Immediately, Prerana noticed one of the greatest horrors in this community was the ultimate plight of children born to prostituted women and the children’s inescapable recruitment into the organized flesh trade. In response to the situation Prerana pioneered several path-breaking interventions, monitored the success stories of each intervention, and disseminated them for mainstreaming.
About Upcoming Webinar
The future of our nation is in danger. Children, the most vulnerable group is subjected to trafficking, sexual exploitation in brothels.
The hardships faced by them are often overlooked despite protection under laws like:
- The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 – Ensures the care, protection, and rehabilitation of children in need.
- The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 – Provides stringent punishment for sexual exploitation and abuse.
- Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 – Aims to prevent trafficking and sexual exploitation of individuals.
- Despite these laws, enforcement remains weak. Many children continue to face exploitation due to systemic lapses and societal apathy.
- The social stigma attached to brothels exacerbates the isolation of these children. Their basic rights to education, health, and a safe environment are often neglected.
- NGOs like Prerana led by Ms. Priti Patkar are tirelessly working to rescue, rehabilitate, and reintegrate these children into society. Their efforts have transformed numerous lives, proving that change is possible with sustained effort.
To elaborate on this grave issue, Maharashtra Judicial Reforms Council is organizing a webinar on 25th June on the topic:
“Rights of children in Brothels: Legal and Social perspectives”
