About the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences
The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS or NUJS) is one of India’s finest National Law Universites. Established in 1999, NUJS offers courses at under and postgraduate levels. It is in Salt Lake City of Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
The university offers a five-year integrated B.A. LLB (Hons.) degree program, and an LLM program. Admission to the former program is through the Common Law Admission Test, a highly competitive, nationwide entrance examination, held jointly by fourteen of the nineteen national law schools. NUJS also offers MPhil, Ph.D., and diplomas in business laws and other programs, in addition to a number of online courses that attract students from 17 countries across the world.
About the IPTLS
The NUJS IPTLS is a Non-SJA Society at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (WBNUJS). The objectives of the IPTLS is to research and initiate discussions on contemporary issues relating to Intellectual Property and Technology Laws as well as spread awareness of such laws both within and outside the university. The IPTLS provides a platform for the discussion and dissemination of opinions on related laws not only specific to India, but also the global community. The IPTLS has had a longstanding record in organizing seminars and conferences, subject specific workshops for students and essay competitions. The Society has also been involved in research projects and advocacy programmes in association with the Ministry of HRD IP Chair at NUJS. In addition, the IPTLS maintains a blog as well as a monthly newsletter highlighting recent developments in intellectual property and technology laws. The aim of these is to prepare a repository of material and discussions on intellectual property and technology laws to aid not only students, but also academicians and interested persons, in engaging in these fields.
About the speaker
Prof. Nimmer is a distinguished scholar, widely recognized as a foremost expert in copyright law. He has authored and updated Nimmer on Copyright, the standard reference treatise in the field, first published in 1963 by his late father, Professor Melville B. Nimmer. the treatise is known to everyone associated with intellectual property laws, and has been cited at various levels of courts in the US and across the globe. Currenlty, he serves as a Professor from Practice at UCLA School of Law and is of counsel to Irell & Manella LLP in Los Angeles, California.
We are pleased to inform you that the NUJS Intellectual Property and Technology Laws Society is hosting the renowned lawyer and copyright scholar, Prof. David Nimmer for an online lecture on the Google v Oracle Case. The lecture will be dedicated to the memory of former NUJS professor and famous legal scholar, Late Prof. (Dr.) Shamnad Basheer.
He would be speaking on the ongoing US case of Google v Oracle which deals with the copyrightability of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), and the standard of fair use.
