Department of Law is organising a National Seminar on “The Constitution of India after 75 years: Past Legacy and Future Obligations” on 27th and 28th November 2025.

About University of North Bengal

The University of North Bengal is a public state university in the North Bengal region of West Bengal, India. Its main campus is located in Raja Rammohanpur, Siliguri, Darjeeling district, in the Indian state of West Bengal.

About National Seminar

The Constitution of India is considered to be a transformative document which aims to fundamentally reshape Indian society, moving away from a hierarchical structure towards an egalitarian and democratic one. This transformation has been achieved through various means, including the establishment of a secular and democratic state, the protection of fundamental rights, and the promotion of social justice. With this concept in mind, the National Seminar aims to provide a platform

i. To critically assess the evolution of Constitutional principles during the preceding 75 years;

ii. To envision the path forward to ensure that the Constitution of India remains robust, vibrant, relevant and inclusive; and,

iii. Address the emerging challenges.

The Seminar discourse may be in the line of the following sub-themes:

  1. Historical Context and Foundational Vision
  2. Evolution through Amendments and Judicial Review
  3. Federalism, Decentralisation and Cooperative Governance
  4. Rights and Duties in Changing Society in India
  5. Challenges ahead: Digital age, Climate Justice, Terrorism and Globalisation
