About the seminar

Transgender community has been facing isolation, exclusion, hatred, discrimination in many parts of the world including India. Moreover, the community faces lack of educational facilities, homelessness, lack of medical facilities including HIV care and unemployment. In extreme cases, they may also face physical assault, sometimes even fatal. As per the Census 2011, around 0.04% of the population of India comprises of the Transgender persons.

However, there is a dearth of data collection on transgender population in recent times in India, in 2019, the Central government has enacted the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act to protect the rights of transgender persons and their welfare. Since it is a sensitive issue, brutalities and discrimination against transgender persons are easily overlooked by all the stakeholders including police and the State.
