About Debate Club

 The Sathyabama School of Law, Debate Club stands as a vibrant forum where students engage in rigorous discourse, honing their argumentative skills and deepening their understanding of legal principles. Led by passionate faculty advisor and student coordinators, the debate club offers a platform for students to delve into pressing legal issues, analyze complex cases, and articulate persuasive arguments. Through regular meetings and competitions, members develop critical thinking abilities, research proficiency, and public speaking prowess, essential qualities for aspiring lawyers.

Event Structure

The event adopts a dynamic debate format, reminiscent of televised news panel discussions. Participants engage in structured debates, rebuttals, and discussions aimed at exploring the nuances of menstrual leave policies. Key topics include the necessity of menstrual leave, its economic and social implications, legal considerations, and the role of employers in policy implementation.

 Theme: Legal, Social, and Economic Perspectives on Menstrual Leave Policy

Participants:

Participants will be randomly assigned roles representing different stakeholders such as: Legislators, Citizens, Interest Groups, Media, Employers, Elected Representatives, etc.

Moderator:

 A moderator will facilitate the debate, posing questions, managing the flow of discussion, and ensuring adherence to the rules.

Event Rounds

PRELIMINARY AND SEMI-FINAL ROUND:

Structure

  • Introduction by Moderator: The moderator will introduce the theme, explaining its relevance in light of recent judicial and legislative developments. The rules and format of the debate will be outlined.
  • Stakeholder Introduction Each stakeholder will briefly introduce themselves and their general stance on the issue of menstrual leave, providing an initial context for their position.
  • Q&A Session The moderator will pose questions to the stakeholders, focusing on anticipated provisions and the necessity of menstrual leave policies. Stakeholders will provide responses that lay the groundwork for their arguments.
  • Rebuttal and Sur-Rebuttal Stakeholders will engage in a structured rebuttal and sur-rebuttal session. Each stakeholder will present counter-arguments and defend their positions against others’ critiques. This session will encourage a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives.
  • Conclusion and Scoring A panel of judges will evaluate the stakeholders based on their clarity, relevance, and persuasiveness. Scores will be tallied, and the highest-scoring stakeholders from each category will advance to the semi-finals.

FINAL ROUND

  • The Top 2 participants from the semi-finals shall advance to the finale of the National Debate on Menstrual Leave competition.
  • This round is based on presentations/ factual information that participants use to support their arguments against the other participant.
  • Participants are allowed to use the help of PPT presentations, short films, surveys and other data to support their arguments provided that these data are solely collected and made by the participants themselves.
  • No plagiarism shall be entertained. All the content presented must either be their own work / must carry a proper source of information.
  • Participants will either be arguing for the progressive or regressive side and this shall be informed a day prior to the final round of the competition.
  • Each participant shall be provided 15 minutes to comprehend their argument in front of the panel of judges.
  • No extension of time shall be provided. Both the participants shall be marked by the panel of judges on their ability to provide factual information to substantive their arguments, their form of presentation, and several other categories.
  • The decision of the organizing committee shall be final and binding and no further changes shall be entertained unless notified by the Organising committee.

VERDICT VOICES

  •  This competition is complimentary to the National Debate on Menstrual Leave, where the participants who advance to semi-finals will be given a privilege to exclusively participate in the ” Verdict Voices” rounds.
  •  The Top 2 participants of the Semi-Final Round shall directly proceed to the final rounds and will not be given an opportunity to be a part of Verdict Voices. However, all the other participants who proceeded to the semi-final shall participate in “Verdict Voices “.

Eligibility

 Students pursuing full-time courses in any institution shall be eligible to participate in this national debate competition.

 Structure of the Round

  • Participants shall be provided with a case analysis/ scenario by the organising committee.
  • All the necessary stationary such as pen, and paper shall be provided by the organising committee.
  • Participants shall only use materials given by the organizing committee and shall be barred from using any other material/ stationery. All electronics/ electric gadgets are barred in this round.
  •  Participants shall be given 45 minutes to arrive at an individual solution for the proposed case/ issue at hand. Extension of time shall not be entertained.
  • Individual prizes shall be provided to the participants based on the scores obtained in the ” Verdict Voices ” round.

Guidelines

  • Participants must register through the registration form link provided in the brochure, uploading the screenshot of payment of registration fee.
  • Confirmation of registration and rules & regulations of the event will be communicated to
  • the participants through their registered mail id.
  • Participants will be provided with an event orientation prior to the event through online
  • mode. Accommodation shall not be provided by the Organising committee.
  • The language of the event is bilingual, participants can choose their language preference on either English or Tamil.
