About the job

Reuters is looking for an experienced and driven journalist with a passion for covering legal matters and courts in India. Based in New Delhi, the journalist in this role will focus on regularly reporting on the biggest legal cases related to business, general news and political news themes. This includes commercial disputes of Indian and foreign multinationals, public interest litigations with significant implications, cases related to fundamental rights and free speech, as well as legal tussles on subjects like taxation and criminal investigations.

The role will require sourcing up with private lawyers, government counsels and company sources to break news on major legal developments, and even potential case filings. The position is a key role in a country where companies often fight long-drawn shareholder or taxation disputes, which raises their reputational and business risks. Also of growing importance is coverage involving activists who file cases challenging Indian regulations and laws, sparking court battles that often shape the policy making process. The journalist should also be able to develop sources in enforcement and crime-fighting agencies to break news on developments related to bank frauds or white-collar crime cases.

The role will extend beyond reporting from courtrooms – be it the Supreme Court, High Courts or other tribunals – and the reporter will be encouraged to write insightful, analytics and in-depth stories about big cases and their possible impact. The successful candidate will be part of a team of top-notch journalists who write about companies, general and political news, and regulations in one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies.

This is a terrific opportunity for a talented and ambitious journalist to make an impact on a competitive and high-profile beat with the world’s largest independent multimedia news organization.
