About the Job

The position will primarily support investigations and will involve reviewing investigation materials, identifying potential legal violations, conducting pre-investigation research, drafting factual reports, developing departmental SOPs, managing investigation materials, and maintaining investigation equipment.

The role will also support the organisation in organising and cataloguing photo and video materials and will act as a liaison between investigators and other departments, with confidentiality as a key requirement.

Eligibility

Applicants should preferably have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Criminology, Journalism, Public Policy, Social Work, Animal Protection, Communications, or a related field.
  • Relevant experience in investigations support, desk research, legal research, case documentation, evidence review, reporting, advocacy, journalism, NGO work, SOP or process documentation, equipment coordination, or a related area.
  • Excellent written English and the ability to prepare clear, factual, and well-structured reports, factsheets, SOPs, and practical guidance documents.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills.
  • Ability to identify relevant facts, gaps, inconsistencies, research requirements, and potential legal or cruelty-related issues.
  • Familiarity with animal protection laws and enforcement processes in India is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with shared drives, spreadsheets, document-management systems, and photo/video filing systems.
  • Good judgement and discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to work with disturbing or graphic material involving cruelty to animals.
  • Ability to coordinate professionally with colleagues across departments.
  • Fluency in English is required; fluency in Hindi and/or other Indian languages is a strong advantage.

Responsibilities

Investigation Note Review and Evidence Assessment

  • Review investigation notes and logs for clarity, completeness, accuracy, and usefulness.
  • Identify missing information, inconsistencies, evidence gaps, and matters requiring clarification.
  • Review photographs, videos, documents, and other investigation materials to identify relevant facts and possible violations.
  • Identify potential violations of applicable animal protection laws, rules, guidelines, licences, court orders, and regulatory requirements.
  • Track pending follow-up points and additional evidence or information required.

Pre-Investigation Research

  • Conduct desk research to assist investigators before fieldwork.
  • Research relevant laws, rules, guidelines, court orders, industry practices, locations, entities, prior complaints, and publicly available records.
  • Identify legal, regulatory, licensing, documentation, confidentiality, safety, access, and equipment-related considerations.
  • Prepare pre-investigation briefs, checklists, questions, and issue lists.
  • Update investigation plans, SOPs, templates, and checklists based on recurring issues and lessons from previous investigations.

Report Drafting and Documentation

  • Draft investigation reports based on field notes, evidence, documents, photographs, and videos.
  • Prepare factsheets, summaries, timelines, background notes, evidence lists, and briefing documents.
  • Prepare case summaries for internal review, legal assessment, government submissions, police complaints, or campaign use.
  • Ensure reports remain professional, accurate, evidence-based, and free from speculation or unsupported claims.
  • Assist in preparing materials for complaints, letters, legal notices, campaign proposals, media pitches, and other follow-up actions.

SOPs and Process Documentation

  • Write, update, and maintain departmental SOPs covering investigation work, evidence handling, report drafting, filing, confidentiality, equipment use, and coordination.
  • Develop checklists, templates, instructions, logs, and other practical guidance.
  • Review SOPs periodically and incorporate lessons learned from investigations and process changes.

Investigator and Department Coordination

  • Act as a liaison between investigators and relevant departments.
  • Coordinate requests for photographs, videos, documents, summaries, and follow-up information.
  • Help investigators understand the information, evidence, captions, timelines, source details, and supporting material required for legal, campaign, media, or advocacy purposes.
  • Ensure sensitive investigation materials are shared only with authorised colleagues.

Equipment and Field Readiness

  • Maintain investigation equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain inventories of cameras, phones, audio/video equipment, batteries, chargers, memory cards, storage devices, and other field materials, as applicable.
  • Ensure equipment is functioning, charged, clean, labelled, accounted for, and ready for use.
  • Coordinate repairs, replacements, purchases, returns, sign-outs, and safe storage.
  • Track equipment issued to investigators and follow up on missing, damaged, faulty, or returned items.

Evidence and Investigation Material Management

  • Organise, label, index, and maintain investigation-related photographs, videos, documents, notes, logs, and other materials.
  • Maintain filing systems that allow information to be retrieved quickly and accurately.
  • Create and maintain folders, spreadsheets, indexes, and logs.
  • Review visual materials to identify relevant content and supporting details.
  • Preserve original files, source information, copyright or usage restrictions, and related context.
  • Restrict sensitive materials to authorised personnel.

Photo and Video Library Support

  • Organise investigation-related photographs, videos, captions, and supporting notes.
  • Assist other departments with photo and video organisation when required.
  • Record relevant information such as source, date, location, department or case, and legal, copyright, ownership, usage, or permission restrictions.
  • Help categorise visual materials for easier retrieval.
  • Support identification of suitable photographs or footage for internal, legal, complaint, campaign, or public-facing purposes, subject to applicable approvals and restrictions.
  • Ensure sensitive, graphic, restricted, unpublished, copyrighted, or permission-limited materials are handled appropriately.

Legal, Campaign, and Cross-Department Support

  • Work with supervisors and legal colleagues to assess whether investigation findings may indicate cruelty, illegal conduct, improper practices, or non-compliance.
  • Prepare factual summaries, factsheets, and briefings for relevant teams.
  • Support the use of investigation findings for complaints, advocacy, government engagement, media use, and public awareness.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding investigations, investigator identities, sources, informants, whistleblowers, operational plans, evidence, unpublished materials, and internal discussions.
