About The Conference
The judiciary stands as a cornerstone in the edifice of justice, ensuring that the rights of individuals are protected and that societies remain equitable and democratic. In 2025, the Supreme Court of India marks a significant milestone—its 75th anniversary. Established in 1950, the Court has evolved into a cornerstone of India’s democracy, safeguarding the Constitution and ensuring justice for over a billion citizens.
In India, the judiciary’s role has extended beyond mere adjudication; it has encompassed the active promotion and protection of socio-economic and political justice, as envisioned in the Constitution. The moment is opportune to reflect not just on the Court’s transformative journey, its current challenges, and its future role in upholding the rule of law but also upon the larger question of the role of the judiciary in upholding the ideal of justice in any constitutional system.
The Centre for Constitutional Law and Human Rights, committed to critical legal research and transformative pedagogy, is organising an international conference titled “Role of the Judiciary in Upholding Social, Economic and Political Justice.”
The present conference aims to explore the multifaceted role of the judiciary in upholding the different dimensions of justice across diverse legal systems. It further seeks to critically examine the various facets of justice—social, economic, political, legal, procedural, and distributive—and explore the contribution of judiciary in actualizing them within contemporary legal frameworks. It exhorts an exploration of avenues for strengthening the capacity of the judiciary to uphold social, economic, and political justice in an ever-evolving global landscape.
Objectives
The conference seeks to:
- To analyse the multi-dimensional nature of justice: Delve into various dimensions of justice and their interconnections.
- To assess the Judiciary’s Role: Evaluate how the judiciary interprets and enforces these dimensions through case law and constitutional interpretation.
- To Identify Challenges: Discuss contemporary challenges faced by the judiciary in upholding justice, including institutional constraints and societal disparities.
- To Propose Reforms: Suggest reforms to enhance the judiciary’s effectiveness in delivering justice across all dimensions.
About the Journal
Selected papers from the conference will be published in an ISBN book as part of the Centre for Constitutional Law and Human Rights’ publication initiative, highlighting scholarly research and original contributions in the field of constitutional and human rights law.
