Concept Note

The development and growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has not been a matter of overnight success for scientists. The journey of AI, which initially began as the imaginative realm of science fiction writers, has now evolved into a tangible reality and become an indispensable part of our lives. This transformative technology has influenced and reshaped numerous industries, with its impact ranging from subtle to profound. Notably, AI has found its way into various aspects of our daily lives, and it is worth considering a few examples to appreciate its significance. Google search predictions, voice recognition, email filtering, weather forecast, Amazon’s Alexa, and Apple’s Siri are a few examples of AI.

In light of this evolving landscape, the IILM Law School, in collaboration with the School of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts at IILM University, is pleased to extend an invitation for the submission of research abstracts to our forthcoming international conference on the contemporary realm of “Artificial Intelligence & Human Rights.” This inaugural conference is conceived with the overarching goal of delving deep into the intricate juncture of AI and human rights within the expansive framework of rights, responsibilities, and ethical obligations.

Eligibility

The organizers invite papers for presentation from academicians, experts, lawyers, research scholars, corporate delegates, human rights experts, policymakers, and students from all disciplines in India and abroad.

Themes

The themes for submissions in the conference are diverse and encompass a wide spectrum of crucial topics at the intersection of AI and Human Rights. These themes provide a framework for discussion and exploration, including but not limited to:

  • Human Rights Interpretations and AI: Delve into the evolving interpretations of human rights in the context of Artificial Intelligence, exploring the ethical and legal dimensions.
  • AI and Challenges for International Human Rights: Examine the challenges and opportunities AI presents to the international human rights framework, including implications for global legal and ethical standards.
  • Application of Common Law Principles on AI: Investigate how established common law principles apply to the realm of Artificial Intelligence, shaping legal reasoning and outcomes.
  • AI, Constitutionalism, and Democracy: Analyze the role of AI in relation to constitutional principles and the maintenance of the rule of law, considering its impact on governance and legal systems.
  • Role of AI in Access to Justice and Justice Delivery: Explore how AI can enhance or hinder access to justice and the efficiency of justice delivery systems.
  • Liability and Ownership Rights in Relation to AI: Discuss the intricate issues surrounding liability and ownership rights concerning AI technologies, especially in cases of intellectual property and innovation.
  • Public Policy Development and Legal/Regulatory Response to AI: Evaluate the formulation of policies and legal or regulatory responses to the proliferation of AI, considering the implications for society and human rights.
  • AI, Geopolitics, and Digital Sovereignty: Investigate the geopolitical dynamics of AI and its implications for digital sovereignty, national interests, and global cooperation.
  • AI and Democracy: Scrutinize the influence of AI on democratic processes and institutions, including its role in elections, governance, and citizen participation.
  • AI in the Context of Bias, Injustice, and Discrimination: Address the challenges and opportunities AI presents in combating or perpetuating bias, injustice, and discrimination in various contexts.
  • AI, Surveillance, Censorship, and Free Speech: Examine the intricate relationship between AI, surveillance, censorship, and the protection of free speech and privacy.
  • Interaction of State and Individual Interest in AI: Analyze the complex interplay between state interests and individual rights in the context of AI, considering issues of privacy, security, and autonomy.
  • Tech Corporations: Responsibilities and Liabilities: Explore the roles and responsibilities of technology corporations in the development and deployment of AI, and consider their legal liabilities in this evolving landscape.

These themes provide a comprehensive framework for engaging with the multifaceted challenges and opportunities presented by the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and human rights, encouraging in-depth discussion and analysis from diverse perspectives.

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstract (Minimum 300 words) along with 5 Minimum Keywords should be sent to [email protected]
  • The title of the paper should be followed by Name, Designation, Name of the Organization / University / Institution, and Email address. It is mandatory to mention your Email address, as all future correspondence will be through it;
  • Name and details of Co-author, if any;
  • Chapter: The chapter should be in Times New Roman 12-point font and double-spaced. The main Title should be in full capitals, bold, and centered with a 12-point font. Sub-titles should be in sentence case, bold, and in 12-point font. Author’s names should be in small capitals and centered 12-point font Footnotes should be in Times New Roman 12-point font;
  • Citation Format: Please use footnotes rather than endnotes. Footnotes should conform to INDIAN LAW INSTITUTE, NEW DELHI STYLE.
  • The originality of Manuscripts: All the contributions should be the original work of the contributors and should not have been submitted for consideration in any other Publication. Any plagiarized work will be outright rejected. (According to UGC Guidelines).
  • Text Style (Times New Roman, Font 12, Line Spacing 1.5)
  • Citation Style (The Indian Law Institute, New Delhi Citation), Times New Roman, Font 10, Line Spacing 1.0)
  • The title of the Chapter should be followed by Name, Designation, Name of the Organization / University / Institution, and Email address. It is mandatory to mention your Email address, as all future correspondence will be through it;
  • Name and details of Co-author, if any;
  • The paper should be typed in MS WORD format
  • The paper must be in single column layout with margins justified on both sides;
  • The length of the paper should not exceed more than 5,000 (Including Footnotes);
  • All Contributions must be submitted to [email protected].

Guidelines for Extended Abstracts

Although abstracts are expected to take a global approach to the issues they cover, global south or country-specific case studies that relate to the AI and human rights discourse will also be considered. Contributions to adopting multidisciplinary approaches are also highly encouraged. Abstracts should set out a description of the topic to be addressed and the issues to be explored and the methodological approach taken. Abstracts should be between 500-700 words to be submitted, before or by 12 November 2023. Foreign delegates and those in remote locations will have the option of presenting remotely through online mode.

Publication Opportunity

Extended Abstracts will be published as a part of conference proceedings. Select papers may be published in an edited book by a reputed publisher. Once extended abstracts are accepted, the last date to submit final papers will be December 28, 2023.

Prizes

  • Two Best Research Papers will be announced and awarded with a Best Research Paper Certificate and a cash prize of Rs 2000.
  • Two Best Speakers will be announced and awarded with Certificates and a cash prize of Rs 1500.
  • Certificates shall be provided to all the participants.
