Delhi High Court Limits Internship Entry Passes to Senior Law Students
The Delhi High Court has limited the entry of law students interning with advocates to senior batches, introducing stricter eligibility conditions for obtaining internship entry passes and identity cards for access to the court premises.
Under the revised arrangement, students enrolled in the three-year LL.B. programme will be eligible only when they are in their third year. In the case of five-year integrated law programmes, only fourth-year and fifth-year students will be permitted to obtain entry passes.

The restriction was communicated through a circular issued by the High Court pursuant to directions of the Chief Justice. The circular makes it clear that students from junior years will no longer be issued internship passes or ID cards by the Court.
The circular states:
“As directed by Hon’ble the Chief Justice, it is hereby circulated for information of all concerned that, henceforth, the entry passes/ID Cards for law students doing internship with Advocates shall be issued by this Court only to the following categories of law students:
• Third-year students of the 3-Y ear LL.B. course; and
• Fourth-year and Fifth-year students of the 5-Year Integrated Law Course”
The new requirement directly affects law students who undertake internships with advocates practising before the Delhi High Court. Students who fall outside the prescribed years will not be eligible for passes issued by the Court for internship-related entry.
Eligible interns will also have to complete the prescribed documentation process. They must submit a recommendation letter from the advocate under whom they are interning. The letter must contain the advocate’s Bar Council enrolment number.

Students are additionally required to submit a photocopy of the advocate’s Bar identity card. A photocopy of the intern’s Aadhaar Card and college identity card must also be provided as part of the application.
Two stamp-size photographs of the intern are also required. These documents will be necessary for processing the entry pass or identity card permitting the eligible student to access the High Court during the internship.
The Delhi High Court has further clarified that no fee or charge is payable for issuance of such entry passes or identity cards. Eligible students who fulfil the requirements can therefore obtain the documents without making any payment to the Court.
The circular significantly narrows the category of law students who can formally access the Delhi High Court premises while interning with advocates. The revised system now restricts such access to students who have reached the senior stages of their respective three-year or five-year law programmes.
