No other candidate submitted a nomination before the deadline on October 26. After the prescribed period for withdrawal of nominations ended, Asmi was declared elected unopposed. Consequently, no polling was required for filling the vacant position.

At just 23 years of age, her entry into the statutory body marks an important generational development in the governance of the legal profession. State Bar Councils perform key regulatory functions relating to advocates and form an important part of the institutional framework governing the legal profession in India.

Several members and senior office-bearers of the legal fraternity were present following the declaration of her election. They included Amit Rana, Chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, and Sharmila Sharma, Vice-Chairman of the Council.

Bar Council of India member Karnajit Singh was also present, along with former Council office-bearers Dr Vijender Singh Ahlawat, Gurtej Singh Grewal and Partap Singh. Council members Rajni Nanda and Dr D.P.S. Randhawa were among those who congratulated Asmi.

Harinder Pal Singh Ishar, Additional Advocate General of Punjab, and advocate Niharika Singh were also present on the occasion. The election has received attention particularly because of Asmi’s age and her reported distinction as the first Generation Z advocate to enter a State Bar Council.

Her election has also increased women’s representation in the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana. Reports state that the Council now has the highest representation of women members among State Bar Councils in the country.

The development reflects the growing presence of younger advocates and women in institutional roles within the legal profession. Asmi will now serve as a member of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, participating in a statutory body responsible for matters concerning advocates and professional regulation.
