Wrong UPI Payment Sent to Someone? Steps and Legal Remedies

Share & spread the love

Sending money to the wrong UPI account can cause financial loss, but there are ways to recover it. If you accidentally transfer money to another person through Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM, you can contact your bank, raise a UPI complaint and seek legal remedies. Although a successful UPI transaction cannot normally be reversed automatically, Indian law provides options for recovering money transferred by mistake.

What Happens If Money Is Sent to the Wrong UPI ID?

When money is transferred through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), it generally reaches the recipient’s bank account within seconds. Once the transaction is successful, the sender cannot simply cancel it.

For example, suppose a person intends to transfer ₹10,000 to a friend but accidentally selects another contact with a similar name. If the transaction is completed successfully, the money reaches the unintended recipient.

According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), a UPI payment cannot be stopped once initiated.

However, this does not mean the money is permanently lost. The sender can request assistance from the bank and take legal action if the recipient refuses to return the amount.

Can a Wrong UPI Transaction Be Reversed?

A wrong UPI transaction cannot ordinarily be reversed automatically after successful completion. However, the sender’s bank may initiate a recovery request through the recipient’s bank.

The recipient may voluntarily agree to return the money. In certain situations, recovery may also be pursued through legal proceedings.

It is important to understand that recovery is not guaranteed merely because a complaint has been filed. The outcome depends on the circumstances, the recipient’s cooperation and the applicable legal process.

How to Recover Money Sent to the Wrong UPI Account?

If money has been transferred to the wrong UPI ID, taking immediate action can improve the chances of recovery.

Step 1: Check the Transaction Details

First, open the UPI application and verify whether the transaction was successful, pending or failed.

If the transaction was successful, preserve the following information:

  • UPI transaction ID: This unique reference number helps the bank identify the payment and investigate the complaint.
  • Transaction date and amount: The exact date, time and amount transferred should be recorded for verification.
  • Recipient details: Preserve the recipient’s name, UPI ID and other available information displayed in the application.

Taking a screenshot of the payment confirmation can help establish that the transfer occurred.

Step 2: Contact the Bank Immediately

The next step is to contact the bank from which the money was transferred.

Explain that the UPI payment was made to the wrong person and request assistance in recovering the amount.

The bank may communicate with the recipient’s bank and initiate the applicable recovery process.

A written complaint should also be submitted so that there is a record of the request. The complaint acknowledgement number should be preserved for future reference.

Step 3: Raise a Complaint Through the UPI Application

Most UPI applications provide a complaint or help section for transaction-related issues.

The general process involves:

  1. Opening the UPI application and visiting the transaction history.
  2. Selecting the transaction involving the wrong recipient.
  3. Opening the help or support section and selecting the relevant complaint option, where available.
  4. Providing transaction details and explaining the mistake.

A complaint raised through the application may be forwarded to the concerned payment service provider or bank.

However, some in-app dispute facilities do not support successful person-to-person payments. In such cases, the bank’s grievance redressal mechanism should be used.

Step 4: Register a Complaint with NPCI

If the issue remains unresolved, a complaint may be registered through the official NPCI complaint portal, subject to the categories supported by the facility.

Official website: https://www.npci.org.in/register-a-complaint

NPCI facilitates the registration and forwarding of eligible transaction complaints to the concerned banks or participating institutions.

The institution handling the complaint remains responsible for examining and resolving it.

What Are the RBI Guidelines for Wrong UPI Transfers?

The Reserve Bank of India regulates payment systems and provides a framework for handling customer grievances relating to digital transactions.

However, there is an important difference between a wrong UPI transfer and a failed UPI transaction.

Failed UPI Transactions

Under the RBI’s framework for failed transactions, where money is debited but the beneficiary’s account is not credited, the amount must generally be reversed by T+1 day if the credit cannot be completed.

A delay beyond the prescribed period attracts compensation of ₹100 per day.

For certain failed UPI merchant payments, the reversal period is T+5 days, with compensation applicable for delays beyond that period.

These rules concern failed transactions and do not automatically apply when money is successfully transferred to the wrong recipient.

Successful but Incorrect UPI Transfers

Where the recipient has successfully received the money, the issue is generally one of mistaken payment rather than technical failure.

Banks may assist with recovery, but RBI’s failed-transaction compensation framework does not guarantee a refund for such mistakes.

Can a Complaint Be Filed with the RBI Ombudsman?

Yes. If a bank fails to handle a wrong UPI payment complaint properly, the customer may approach the RBI Ombudsman for an alleged deficiency in banking services.

The Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, which came into effect on 1 July 2026, provides a free complaint resolution mechanism.

Before approaching the Ombudsman, a complaint must first be submitted to the concerned regulated entity.

If the bank’s response is unsatisfactory, or no response is received within 30 days or a longer applicable regulatory period, the customer may escalate the matter.

The Ombudsman complaint must generally be filed within 90 days from the expiry of the applicable response period or the last communication from the bank, whichever is later.

Complaints can be submitted through the official portal:

RBI Complaint Management System: https://cms.rbi.org.in/

The Ombudsman can examine deficiencies in banking services. However, it cannot automatically require an unrelated recipient to return money merely because the sender made a mistake.

What If the Wrong UPI Recipient Refuses to Return the Money?

If the recipient refuses to return money received by mistake, civil legal remedies may be available.

Section 72 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872

Section 72 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872, provides that a person who receives money by mistake or under coercion is required to repay or return it.

This provision can apply when money is accidentally transferred to a person who has no legal entitlement to retain it.

For example, if ₹20,000 is accidentally transferred to an unknown person, the sender may rely on Section 72 to seek repayment.

The recipient’s obligation to repay can exist even though there was no agreement between the sender and recipient.

Filing a Civil Recovery Case

If voluntary repayment is refused, the sender may consider issuing a legal notice and filing a civil suit for recovery of money.

The transaction receipt, bank records and correspondence may be used as evidence.

The appropriate court, limitation period and available relief depend on the circumstances of the case.

Can a Police Complaint Be Filed for a Wrong UPI Payment?

A police complaint may be appropriate where there is evidence of fraud, deception or another criminal offence.

However, an accidental UPI payment does not automatically become a criminal case merely because the recipient refuses to return the money.

The circumstances must be examined to determine whether a criminal offence has occurred.

Where a UPI transaction involves cyber fraud, the matter can be reported through:

These facilities are intended for reporting suspected cybercrime and financial fraud, rather than ordinary mistaken payments without criminal elements.

How Long Does It Take to Recover a Wrong UPI Payment?

There is no fixed recovery period applicable to every successful UPI transfer made to the wrong person.

If the recipient cooperates, repayment may happen relatively quickly. However, where banks need to coordinate or legal proceedings become necessary, the process may take longer.

Recovery also depends on whether the recipient can be contacted, whether the funds remain available and whether sufficient evidence exists.

Consequently, immediate reporting and proper documentation are important.

How to Avoid Sending Money to the Wrong UPI ID?

Several precautions can reduce the risk of accidental UPI transfers.

  • Verify the recipient’s details: Before entering the UPI PIN, check the displayed recipient name and UPI ID carefully. Similar names can sometimes lead to incorrect payments.
  • Confirm the payment amount: Check the amount entered before authorising the transaction, particularly when making large payments.
  • Check QR codes before paying: Ensure that the QR code belongs to the intended recipient or merchant before completing the transaction.
  • Avoid hurried transactions: Taking a few seconds to confirm the payment details can prevent unnecessary financial loss.

Conclusion

Sending money to the wrong UPI account does not necessarily mean the amount cannot be recovered. The sender can immediately approach the bank, register a complaint through the appropriate UPI channels and seek assistance with recovering the payment.

If the recipient refuses repayment, Section 72 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872, may provide a basis for civil recovery. Where banking services are deficient, the RBI Ombudsman may also provide a remedy.

However, a successful wrong UPI transfer does not carry an automatic refund guarantee. Prompt reporting, proper documentation and choosing the appropriate legal remedy remain essential.
