UPSIFS is affiliated to the National Forensic Science University (NFSU), Gandhinagar, an Institute of National Importance established by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

About Workshop

Wrongful convictions and prosecutions are pressing concerns in India’s criminal justice system. Over three-quarters of prisoners in India are under pre-trial detention, reflecting systemic flaws in ensuring justice. The 277th Report of the Law Commission of India (2018) titled “Wrongful Prosecution (Miscarriage of Justice): Legal Remedies” shed light on the significant challenges in addressing these miscarriages of justice.

The report highlighted factors such as investigative errors, inadequate legal representation, and systemic biases that lead to wrongful prosecutions and convictions. Such convictions violate the Fundamental Rights guaranteed by The Constitution of India. Hence, a thorough discussion of the issue is relevant for improving our criminal justice system.
