About the Competition
Tamil Nadu Legal Rights Consortium is pleased to invite you to participate in a Women-Centric Film Review and Discussion Competition, an initiative designed to encourage critical thinking, media literacy, and gender sensitivity through the analysis of cinema that foregrounds women’s voices, struggles, achievements, and representation.
This competition seeks to create a thoughtful space where participants engage meaningfully with gender narratives in cinema while developing analytical writing and discussion skills. The event will be conducted in two stages: an online review submission followed by a live discussion round.
Objectives of the Competition
- To promote awareness of women-centric storytelling in cinema
- To encourage analytical and critical reviewing skills
- To create a platform for informed discussion on gender representation in media
- To enable participants to express independent opinions on the portrayal of women in cinema
Eligibility
- Open to all participants / students / women participants
- Participation is individual only
Competition Format
Round 1: Online Review Submission
- Participants are required to submit a written movie review of 1000–1500 words
- The movie must be women-centric (a list of films to be reviewed will be provided by the consortium)
- Submission Deadline: 23 December
- Language: English
- Submission Format: PDF or Word document
Expected Outcomes
- Increased appreciation of women-driven cinema
- Development of critical viewing, reviewing, and discussion skills
- Creation of a safe and inclusive space for gender-based conversations
- Identification and encouragement of emerging writers and critics
General Guidelines
- Originality: Only original work will be accepted. Plagiarism or copying from online sources, books, or existing reviews will result in disqualification.
- Respectful Reviews: Participants are encouraged to share honest opinions; however, reviews must be respectful and thoughtfully written.
- No Personal Attacks: The review must not target or insult:
– Characters in the film
– Actors or actresses
– Directors or creators of the film - Focus on the Film: Critiques should address the storyline, themes, portrayal, and narrative, not the personal lives or intentions of individuals involved in the filmmaking process.
- Constructive Criticism: Diverse perspectives are welcome, provided they are fair, constructive, and expressed courteously.
- Right to Disqualify: The organising team reserves the right to reject any submission that fails to comply with the above guidelines.

Round 2: Discussion & Presentation Round
- Shortlisted participants will take part in a panel-style discussion
- Duration: 5–7 minutes per participant
- Date: 27 December
- Discussion topics will include:
– Representation of women in the selected film
– Social relevance and impact of the film
– Personal interpretation and critical perspective
Evaluation Criteria (Round 2):
- Communication skills
- Thorough understanding of the chosen film
- Articulation and presentation
