The National Law University, Delhi (‘University’) is seeking to engage one full-time ‘Consultant – Research’ for Project 39A, at its campus in Dwarka, New Delhi, on a 12 month contractual basis. The Consultant will be primarily responsible for implementing and coordinating a research project examining the practical application of due process safeguards on arrest and remand, in Magistrate Courts in Delhi. 

About the Project 39A

Project 39A is inspired by Article 39-A of the Indian Constitution, a provision that furthers the intertwined values of equal justice and equal opportunity by removing economic and social barriers. These are constitutional values of immense importance given the manner in which multiple disparities intersect to exclude vast sections of our society from effectively accessing justice. Using empirical research to re-examine practices and policies in the criminal justice system, Project 39A aims to trigger new conversations on legal aid, torture, DNA forensics, mental health in prisons, and the death penalty.

About the opportunity

Project 39A is inviting applications for Consultant (Research).

Responsibilities

  1. Implement the Magistrate Court Study, as per the project design, under the supervision of the project leads.  
  2. Conduct all activities involved in the administration of the project, including managing a team of full-time researchers. 
  3. Liaise with District and State Legal Aid authorities, judges, lawyers, police, and other institutions and authorities, to ensure effective implementation of the project. 
  4. Conduct empirical research through observation of court proceedings in select Magistrate Courts in Delhi and interviews with relevant stakeholders. 
  5. Collate and analyse findings from court observations and interviews. 
  6. Writing and publication of the report and other materials based on the findings of the project. 
  7. Contribute to developing, and implementing effective media and outreach strategies to launch the report and disseminate the findings of the report, after publication. 
  8. Any other work that may be necessary to ensure the effective implementation and completion of the project within the proposed timelines. 

Qualifications

  1. A postgraduate degree in any of the relevant fields, including Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science or any other Social Sciences. 
  2. Demonstrable experience of conducting independent research and writing, particularly on socio-legal issues. 
  3. Knowledge and experience of conducting ethnographic or empirical research. 
  4. Knowledge and familiarity with issues related to the criminal justice system, courts, and criminal procedure. Prior work in Delhi courts would be an advantage. 
  5. Prior engagement with perspectives on systemic discrimination (for instance, due to caste, class, religion, gender, sexuality) and its intersection with access to justice concerns.  
  6. Ability to comprehend, converse, read and write Hindi, fluently.
  7. Compensation

Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will be approximately INR 55,000 per month. The duration of the contract currently will be twelve (12) months. The contract may be terminated before the completion of twelve (12) months or may be extended, as required.
